Telnet/Secure Shell
Secure Shell
Secure Shell or SSH is a network protocol that allows data to be exchanged using a secure channel between two networked devices. [1] Used primarily on Linux and Unix based systems to access shell accounts, SSH was designed as a replacement for Telnet and other insecure remote shells, which send information, notably passwords, in plaintext, leaving them open for interception.[2] The encryption used by SSH provides confidentiality and integrity of data over an insecure network, such as the Internet.

IRC
Internet Relay Chat is an internet protocol designed mainly to allow users to send and receive messages in a group situation, but also supports private one-on-one messaging and transferring of files. A user connects to an IRC server via an IRC client. How each IRC server works is unique but follows the general sort of rules. Inside an IRC server there are many chatrooms called "Channels" which are normally based around a certain topic, it is not unusual for one client to connect to many different channels. Generally it is free to register a nickname with an IRC server to prevent identity theft on that IRC server and also free to register a channel - when you register a channel it becomes under the ownership of your registered nick name.
There are many uses for IRC but the main feature is its ease of use to communicate instantly with others around the globe, with very low bandwidth usage (Dial-up users can use it without "lag" problems).
