The Vision & Objectives of India Node

Vision

  • To make available contexual educational materials freely
  • Realisation of free version of the education curriculum by 2015.

Objectives

  1. Support and Coordinate the WE activities in India
  2. Support the development of a Transnational curriculum.
  3. Promote free content development
  4. Promote the use of WikiEducator
  5. Provide Learner support

Background

India has a very rich educational history. In the ancient days, sages and scholars imparted education orally, but after the development of letters, it took the form of writing. Palm leaves and barks of trees were used for education, and this in turn helped spread the written literature. By the spread of Buddhism in India, education was made available to everyone and this led to the establishment of some world famous educational institutions Nalanda, Vikramshila and Takshashila.

Later, when the British arrived in India, English education was popularised with the help of the European missionaries.

Independent India has given greater thrust to education and now it has hundreds of universities and thousands of colleges affiliated to them. India has scores of colleges in every discipline and has positioned itself comfortably as a country that provides quality higher education to its people in specific and to the world in general.

However, because of so many factors, the expense for education (especially professional education) has gone up to very high levels and poor families find it very difficult to send their children for higher and professional education. Hence, the free and open curriculum of WikiEducator becomes important.

A node for Transnational Qualification Framework

The India Node has proposed a Qualification Framework Movement in National Level and World Level, following the WE objective of developing National Curricula.

It is a very difficult task to set standards for curricula as knowledge is changing day by day, and now the education curricula are highly depended on place and accessibility factors. Country specific variations are required in the studies on Agriculture, History, Literature and some Vocational subjects.

However, it has to be attempted because:

  1. It will popularize the use of open and free content on it.
  2. The services of the voluntary content developers can be led in a more structured way.

Please see the Qualification Framework Project Node for further details

National Qualifications Framework

The demand for evolving a National Qualification Frame work for India is very high. It is being actively discussed at different venues. UGC's Higher Education Information Systems Project, launched in 2004, among other things, aims at a National Qualification Framework.

This is a space for online discussions and support to the National Agencies that are involved in the development of a National Qualifications Framework for India. Please visit and add your views, suggestions and experiences at:- National Qualifications Framework
