Welcome WikiEducators,

My name is Gladys Gahona. I am a mexican private teacher of Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. In 1977, in order to economically support my studies, I started teaching math at a secondary school. In 1981 I graduated in chemical engineering at Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY), in Mérida, Yucatán, México. During the last years of my university studies, I worked at UADY at the former Planning Department (today General Coordination of Planning and Institutional Assessment) where I had the opportunity to be assitant of several educational researchers, working in collaborating projects along with several mexican and foreign universities. In 2002 I graduated in Technology Management at UADY.

Although my professional formation is oriented to engineering, productivity, business and technology management, I've loved teaching since ever. My job (AF Centro, in Cancun, Q.Roo, México) consists on tutoring and providing counseling and student support services to learners of secondary & early tertiary level, helping them on homeworks, or preparing them for examinations. There is a special group I love to work with, adult people. They are confident and enthusiastic learners, they always give the best of them.

The knowledge I have gained in teaching/tutoring comes from my personal experiences and self-studies. I've also been a self learner in computing, web programing, ITC and web 2.0 platforms and tools. Since last November I have had the privilege to meet Nellie Deutsch who has become an inspiring mentor to me on improving my English language as well as moderating live online conferences, facilitating online courses, and integrating technology into education. Now I dedicate my professional life to my two passions: teaching and learning, particularly learning by doing and learning by "helping". =)

My Professional Interests

Mastering English language as a way to gain opportunities to reach more learners on my teaching subjects.

Building my capacities for developing e-learning programmes and courses.

I'm interested in OER projects, hope I can soon join experts on collaborative jobs.

Offering my capacities on translating WikiEducator content to Spanish language.

Develop original content in spanish language using all I know about Web 2.0 resources & technologies.

I'm targeting to be a WikiMaster, so I have a long way to walk.

Mastering \mathrm{L\!\!^{{}_{\scriptstyle A}} \!\!\!\!\!\;\; T\!_{\displaystyle E} \! X} \, in order to create high quality science books.

My areas of expertise

  • I am Chemical Engineer by professional formation. Worked in engineering from 1981 to 1983, when I had to quit, responding on "mother nature calling" (got high risk pregnancy). So it marked the end on my proffesion (chemical engineer) activities.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Technology Management. 2002
  • I am teacher by vocation. I consider myself as a permanently self-learner on this activity since 1976. I started teaching Maths to kids on a secondary school. At that time I started working in Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, as assistant on several educational researching activities and colaborative jobs with people from different countries. Later, I started a private teaching small institute.
  • About computing topics, I'm a self-learner:
    • I've been using several applications:
      • MSDOS
      • Windows on all versions (except Windows Vista)
      • Microsoft Office
      • Adobe Suites (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash CS3, Illustrator, Photoshop, Audition, Premier, etc.)
      • Web development (HTML, CSS, Newbie in PHP/MySQL)
      • Open source apps. (Open Office, Mozilla, Audacity, VirtualDubMod,
      • Software for business management
    • And some Web 2.0 technologies & resources
      • Blogging
      • Networking on Xing, Facebook, LinkedIn, Hi5, etc.
      • Now I'm discovering Ning
      • Image's sharing networks like Flickr, ImageHack, Picassa Google
      • Paper's sharing networks like SlideShare, Scribd, WiziQ, AutorStream
      • Media sharing networks like YouTube, TeacherTube, GoogleVideo, Blip.tv
      • Addicted to WikiEducator
      • \mathrm{L\!\!^{{}_{\scriptstyle A}} \!\!\!\!\!\;\; T\!_{\displaystyle E} \! X} \, initiated, that means learning, learning, learning...
