How does academic writing differ from other types of writing?

In comparison with writing in High School, academic writing involves getting into more complex and serious topics that have to be objectively discussed, however; most pieces of advice that students receive in High School are later useful when writing in College to provide a better idea about what academic writing is.

What is the function of academic papers?

The purpose of writing an academic paper is to create different points of view among people who read it, that is why it has to be very objective and clear.

What are the concepts of academic writing?

-Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars

-Academic writing is devoted to topics and questions that are of interest to the academic community.

- Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument.

What does the following statement mean? ...academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars.

An academic paper is always shared among people who understands the topic the paper discusses. Therefore, it has to be smartly made, using academic jargon, clearly supported, concrete and objective.

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why?

No. Actually, academic writing involves writing about what we know or what we think about a certain topic but not about what we feel about the way one or many different researchers interpret that topic. It has to be objective and concrete.

How does one form an informed argument?
'
In order to form an informed argument, we have to know in detail the topic we discuss, provide strong support to our statement and the validation will be always provided by the reader, who is normally a person who belongs to the same research area.

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing?

Academic writing differs a lot from other types of writing because it is so much formal and organized. You have to take a lot of aspects into consideration such as: The audience, the appropriate tone and style, etc.

What does the following statement mean? ...academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars.

It means that being a scholar requires that you read, think, argue and write in certain ways. So, in order to have an understandable reading for everybody, everyone has to write in a certain way (academic way)

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why?

No, including personal responses in an academic paper is not acceptable. On the contrary, our statements have to be written in a critical and analytical way rather than in a personal way.

How does one form an informed argument?

There are topics that do not require the writer to have a lot of information. However, in some other cases, the topic requires the writer to research more information about the topic or in other occasions when you do not know much about a topic you have to look for information. In order to realize how much you know about a topic, you can answer the WH questions.

1.Academic writing is very different from other types of writing, because here is: scholars writing to scholars. The topic that you choose, has to do with academic community, topics that students are familiarize with.

2. The main function is to inform academic community. when writing we must consider different aspects that will help us to develop a great topic. Academic writing, is not like high school, to write and write and maybe without any coherence, writing in college has to be more complex.

3. The concepts for academic writing are basically three: Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars, as i said before. Academic writing is devoted to topics and questions that are of interest to the academic community. it is important to know that we are writing to scholars, so we have to talk about topics related to that context ( academic community) Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument: when writing it is important to consider what i know, what don't i know, what is known and what i think about it.

4. The phrase: "academic writing is writing done by scholar for other scholars", is mainly to write a college student. 5. We as writers shouldn't include personal responses in an academic paper, because we should consider ourselves as readers too. 6. The informed argument is as i said before, to see what i know about the topic, what dont't i know, and what is known. the form argument is just to meet the expectations for the academic readers, in this case our college students.

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing?

Academic writing is, as the reading says, for scholars. this means that is for academic purposes with topics related to "academic topics" not any kind of writing like what someone did on their vacations
What is the function of academic papers?

The main objective of an academic paper is to inform the academic community. to show your stance on a certain topic, in favor, against or maybe just informing about the topic

What are the concepts of academic writing?

Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars:

You will read about, think about, argue about, and write about topics related to the academic field you are on

Academic writing is devoted to topics and questions that are of interest to the academic community.

Depending on the subject, the academic paper has to be relevant to that area, trying to be of interest to the people in that field

Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument.

The writer has to take a stance about his/her ideas and inform about them to the reader

What does the following statement mean? ...academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars.

That the academic writing is written by educated people in certain field or fields and the audience is educated in the same area(s)

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why? yes, it is ok, but only with care to not overuse it because if you use it too much the paper might become very subjective

       * How does one form an informed argument? }

The first thing we have to consider is what we already know about the topic we are going to write about then, what is important about it, what is the relationship between what I know and what is of importance, and finally, what I don’t know and should look for. This is for a personal response, but for analytical writing we have to: Summarize: focus on what is important Evaluate: constantly check what was written, analyze if it is fulfilling the needs of the paper Analyze, to check if the parts of the paper have a relationship with each other

Synthesize: to see If the ideas have a meaning and a connection as a whole

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing? Because it has to be more ellaborated and it has to be like really formal.

What is the function of academic papers? To help us research and develop a topic in which we are interested.

What are the concepts of academic writing? 1. Academic writing is done for students to some other students. Students have to argue and develop their own ideas about a certain topic and then share their work with somebody else.

2. Find a topipc that could be interesting not for you but for your classmates and teacher.

3. Students have to really investigate about their topics and then write what they understood about it, but always remembering that it has to be interesting for the writer and for the reader.

What does the following statement mean? ...academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars. That students have to share their work with their classmates and it has to be clear and understandable for them as it was for the one who wrote it.

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why? Yes it is because students have to talk about their own point of view and in some cases compare or discuss about it. How does one form an informed argument? First we have to think in what we know about the topic and then if it is not enough well, we have to research about this topic.

Flakitamacias (talk)02:12, 10 September 2010

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing? it is different because we belong to a college dregree and we are required to write more formal. we are not in high school anymore and the way we use to write in there might not be the correct one to argue about a topic.

What is the function of academic papers? its function is to write a constructed argument about a topic and stablish what we think about that topic, but we need to be supported by details or facts that can give credibility to our topic.

What are the concepts of academic writing? There are three concepts for academic writing that might defined well what it is, the first one is "Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars" the second is "Academic writing is devoted to topics and questions that are of interest to the academic community". And the las one is "Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument"

What does the following statement mean? ...academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars. It means that now we are in a college level, and our work needs to be more formal and have a clearer argument. Maybe the work that we use to do for lower levels is not appropriate anymore. We now belong to a community of scholars and we need to write in certain way, we are aske to think, argue and comment in a way that our education end preparation will help us to do and understan.

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why? when writing a about a topic it is needed to write what you know about the topic and later what you think about it.

How does one form an informed argument? when we are writing about a subject we need to ask firs these questions: What do I know about my topic?, What seems important to me about this topic?, How does this topic relate to other things that I know?, What don't I know about my topic?in these way it might be a kind of guide to start writing what we know about the topic. And then the part about what we think about the topic we can summarize, evaluate, analyze or synthesize our personal response to the subject.

C A R O:

  • How does academic writing differ from other types of writing?

For me the first difference is that in academic writing you have to be critical and analitical when writing to get the reader's attention! And maybe that you have to be more concise and talk about interesting topics for the academic community. We have to write clearly, to have an interesting and argueable thesis and to construct paragraphs in a coherent and focused way.

  • What is the function of academic papers?

For me the main function of academic papers is that you have to try to find a topic that will be considered as interesting and appropriate. Maybe looking for a context into which can place questions and observations may be very useful and distinguisable of academic writing. Another function is that your paper should be of interest to their teachers and peers. You must write something that your readers will find useful, in conclusion you as a writer have to write something that helps the reader to really understand your topic.

  • What are the concepts of academic writing?

1. Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars: It means that we have to be engaged in the actions of: read about, think about, argue about, and write about great ideas. 2. Academic writing is devoted to topics and questions that are of interest to the academic community: This means that your academic writing have to be focused on real contexts, interesting topics and to write about interesting topics for readers, in other words you have to add information to the one that is already known by readers. 3. Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument: It give us an idea of the first stage of realizing about you already know and think about the topic you will write about, so in conclusion you have to consider the expectation of the academic reader.

  • What does the following statement mean? ...academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars.

Academic writing has to be more focused and professional because you are going to show up your work to other collegues, it is that you have to be writing to other peers that are also inmersed in the academic field.

  • Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why?

No, because it is not going to be objective, analitical and critital!

So we have to avoid including personal responses to improve our academic writing!

  • How does one form an informed argument?

I would say that the first aspect that we have to be based on is about what we already know about the topic and to find out about the importance of it, and find a relationship between both concepts. Then we have to be analytical when writing to be able to summarize, evaluate and syntethyze our academic writing.

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing?

Academic writing is different from other types of writing because it is focused on topics that are related with a common interest where scholarships writ for other scholarships, in this way the written information will be useful for other scholarships, another important thing to consider is that it needs to be supported for a personal point of view of the topic.

What is the function of academic papers?

To create topics developed by students, where other students can consult information and in this way create a personal database of information, where it will be used and classified in order to inform to other students about topics that are from their interest with a particular point of view

What are the concepts of academic writing?

1. Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars.

2. Academic writing is devoted to topics and questions that are of interest to the academic community.

3. Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument.

What does the following statement mean? ...academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars.

It means that academic writing is done by students according to a common interest where other students will be interested about, so academic writing is done by other scholarships and the information will be acquired and interpreted in a personal point of view.

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why?

Yes it will be necessary to make emphasis and a difference among the original ideas and your own point of view, in this way you will be writing something different, with a different perception and a different perspective of ideas that you used in order to create the academic paper

How does one form an informed argument? First of all we should analyze what we know about the topic and write about it, later we should locate the important information and how it relates with other topics that we know and others that we don’t know, finally we should write our personal point of view and conclude evaluating and summarizing the information.

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing? It differs a lot, because it is another level of writing, you have to take a lot of details into consideration such as write with coherence and cohesion, you have to give your own opinion about it, an arguable thesis, and you have to be clear. Also beside these things you have to avoid redundancy, write with appropriate words, use synonyms, do not use contraction etc…

What is the function of academic papers? The function of academic papers is to create a new knowledge from the one that is already given from other authors.

What are the concepts of academic writing? Academic writing has to be done in a clear and interesting way, in order that the community shows interest on it. Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars. Academic writing should present the reader with an informed argument.

What does the following statement mean? Academic writing is writing done by scholars to other scholars? This means that you are in a community of scholars. So you have to write, to think and to argue about things that other students already write about it.

Is it okay to include personal responses why? Yes because if you don’t write your personal response, it going to seem that you are stoling the ideas of others.

How does one form an informed argument? First you have to consider how much you know about the topic, you can answer the wh questions; then you have to see what is important to you about the topic; you have to know How does this topic relate to other things that you know and what you do not know about it.

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing?

It is a different way to write because it must be formal, but the autor have to write about interesting topic for students and teachers. This kind of writing it is very useful because contain an important and reliable information.

What is the function of academic papers?

The main purpose is: to give information about a particular topic and provide the specific information for the readers in order to understand the topic in a easy way.

What are the concepts of academic writing?

I think that it refers to the audience in this case the students write for the other student to share their knowledge about topics that they to know.

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why?

Yes, because it is necessary to give our point of view, but we have to be careful because we have to be critical and analytical at the moment to write our opinion of a specific topic.

How does one form an informed argument?

I think that we have to have in mind our knowledge about the topic. Then when we have clear our knowledge or information about the topic we could continue with the researching for more information of the topic. An finally with have to analyze the new information and put together with our information.

1.-The difference is that in academic writing we have to write clearly to get an interesting and appropiate topic for readers or for the objevtive, to use coherence and cohesion in the paragraphs, to use different vocabulary, it means to replace common and colloquial words by using synonims, to use appropiate tone and style according to academic level and finally one of the most important aspects is that all that we write is researched in different sources.

2.-I think, it is to give information, to entertain, to illustrate, to teach, to have a different perspective, to create different opinions about a certain topic.

3.-It is written by the same academic community for the same one. It is interesting for the audience to whom it concerns.

4.-The students who write, they write for the same community, to look for the topic they ar interested in, to know the activities they do etc.

5.- Yes, because besides the information given in the writing paper, we have to include our own point of view according to the information we obtained in order to show different opinion.

6.-By researching the topic we want to write it. look for information that it going to support in different sources in order to get more than one idea about it.

How does academic writing differ from other types of writing? it is a very formal writing process becasue academic writing implies many aspects to consider, but in this case they need to be very specific and very clear, also the way or the role of the argument in this kind of writings is very important and talking about others it is not necessary to be very specific and clear.

the functions for academic papers is to make more meaninful and interesting the topic and the writing style of students, in order to make them more efficient and realible.

it means that it is important for scholars to be objective when they write becasue they are taken as examples for the learners or other scholarmates.

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why?

sometimes it is going to depend of te topic and what it implies becasue writers have to have a personal pespective and trasmit some responses to readers.

       *

How does one form an informed argument? it is formed by supporting data and it has to be very realistic and objective.

Is it okay to include personal responses in an academic paper, why?

NO. ACTUALLY, ACADEMIC PAPERS MUST BE OBJECTIVE. IN ACADEMIC WRITING WE JUST WRITE ABOUT WHAT WE KNOW OR WHAT WE THINK ABOUT A CERTAIN TOPIC, BUT WE DO NOT WRITE ABOUT WHAT WE FEEL ABOUT THAT TOPIC OR THE WAY THAT OTHER RESEARCHERS INTERPRET THAT TOPIC. PERSONAL POINTS OF VIEW MUST BE RESTRICTED WHEN WRITING AN ACADEMIC PAPER.

Yeah it is okay. But we have to take into consideration that we have to add something of our own in order to create an argument. We have to be analytical instead than personal.

How does one form an informed argument? We have to take into consideration some important aspects like. To ask ourselves questions about what do we know about the topic. To have an idea about what do I know about the topic that help readers to understand it. To ask what don’t I know about the topic (what do I need to know). And to know what do I think (to have fresh observations, to add something but recognizing that writing should be. analytical).

How does one form an informed argument?

Academic writing differ from other types of writing because it is for scholars and written by scholars. In addition , academic writing is more formal, we should avoid contractions, phrasal verbs, repeating too much the same vocabulary etc.

The function of academic papers is to find a topic which could be interesting for others. To make them feel good when reading a good topic.

Academic writing is written by scholars to scholars, It has to be interesting for others and it should present an argument.

The statement …Academic writing is writing done by scholars for other scholars. It means that those topics are interesting for the same kind of community (academic community) and someone may write something interesting for him and another person, for example in the same age, would be also interested in.

It is important to include personal responses in an academic paper because in this way the writer is expressing his own ideas and at the same time is being analytical with the topic.

We form an informed argument by seeing what we know about the topic, then we look the relationship between the topic and concepts I already know and finally analyzing the topic, researching and giving different opinions.

1. The first point is about the words used; on an academic writing I cannot use repeated statements, ideas or phrases just to “fill the sheets”.

Another aspect is the fact that I will take into consideration another people (authors) when writing my paper and give them the credit they deserve.

Topic must be interesting for a specific type of audience.

2. to give new information about a certain topic, to compare diferent points of view,to give a opinion based on other authors.

5.no, because including personal opinions will influence the audience to think or believe in the author´s believes, and the point of a research paper is to inform and allow others readers to think for themselves.

6. By selecting the topic and then do research about it according to what I want to know about it nad what i am interested to probe or show to other people.
