  • Hi all! I look forward to my second WE workshop, learning more about WE along with each one of you. I´m an EFL teacher educator and foreign language coordinator at the UAA, and I´m interested in how TESOL and Web 2.0 can live as one (smile). My main goal in this brief workshop is to find a space within the WE community where my coding questions can be answered once this workshop is over. I had such a great experience during my first workshop that I felt (and feel) a bit frustrated afterwards not being able to find the technical support I needed to do what I wanted to do in WE. And this has no reflection on the fine folks at WE, rather me going through the learning process which I'm ready to continue with everyone over the next week.--Benjamin Stewart 04:57, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

Ok, here are my questions and general WE suggestions that I have:
  • I remain a pending member at the WE google group and I'm not sure why. See simplybox to view the message I got from Google Groups. Regardless if it's a WE or a Google issue, my main contention is why we use google groups at all. In my humble opinion. all discussions (whether in a workshop or otherwise) should be held in WE - just as you´ve ask me to do here in posting my questions again within this workshop. One argument is that people should be given the choice to participate within WE or in Google groups, whichever they feel more comfortable with. And if this is the argument, then why require participants to login to WE in order to make page edits and Kaltura video edits...something I am not in favor of. In other words, why not keep all the coding and technical support discussions within WE and give all participants the right to edit WE pages and Kaltura videos without having to create a WE account. If everyone could edit pages and Kaltura videos (with or without a WE account), then more people along the "long tail" would be participating as opposed to just those at the "head".

  • How does one delete the seven media clips picture here at the right-hand side of the edit screen in Kaltura? See here to view a picture of what I´m referring to - a picture is worth a thousand words in this case.


  • Is this course appropriate for discussing how to insert widgets (i.e., youtube, bliptv, twitter, etc.)? Sergey was kind enough to respond to my inquiry regarding widgets (see simplybox) but it's still technically over my head. I´d love to see an example and have a discussion with someone willing to "hold my hand" through this coding process.
  • Ok, I´m not sure exactly what this means, but ok. Widgets do work in WE, right? It seems that the future of any web site design is it's ability to integrate technologies (i.e., embedding voicethread, youtube, bliptv, twitter, to wiki). Is the question whether widgets should be part of WE, or how widgets are to be used in WE? Just curious.--Benjamin Stewart 19:57, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
  • I also would love WikiEducator permit embedding objects and other stuff like that. I don't think it is a tech issue, I think it is more related to a conflict between open source code and propietary codes. --Gladys Gahona 20:42, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
My understanding is that WikiEd will allow embedding of 3rd party media, as long as their is an export to an open source protocol. Blip.tv fits into this category. This will be announced sometime in 2009 Randy Fisher 16:52, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Gladys is right on. All content within WikiEducator is licensed without a non-commercial restriction. We believe in the right of people to make a living. I'd like to confer with Gladys and the group about this - to see what the demand is... of course, if there's only one person! then that may be demand enough....still, let me check and get back to you.   • No problem. I just saw it in the schedule and was curious.
  • I have an image at this site (at the bottom of the page) and I don't see the code to delete it. Any ideas? Or am I just not seeing it.
  • Your page, and decens of other pages uses Template:Media. It was designed using an image named "Icon multimedia.gif", clicking on it takes you to the corresponding image page. Look at the previous versions, User:Gpradeep inadvertently uploaded an image which has exactly the same title as the one of mentioned icon. This is a usual error which ocurs when a user, uploading images bypasses the system warning of a pre-existent image which has the same name. This kind of errors should be highlighted on "uploading images" tutorials in order to prevent its occurrence. I just reverted the uploading, then correct icon is active again.   • Question:From my user page, I go to the following page: My watchlist>There are new messages for you. There I find a list of messages and next to each message there is a box the reads read. Thinking read was in the present tense and not sure what would happen afterwards, I clicked on this button which immediately caused the message to disappear from this page.   • Hi Ben, there are two parts on New messages page: Messages sent to you and Messages on other talk pages, when you click read button next to any message, you can find this message on your discussion page for the first case and on the original discussion page for the second one. For messages located on other discussion pages you should be sure you know the name of the page before click the button. After you click button, you can find an undo button located at top of the page, next to Threat "name of your message" marked as read after you click read button, but you can use it for recover the last message only. It means, if you click another message as read, you only will be able to recover the last one, if you leave the page and return to page again, this button will dissappear too. There is another button called Mark all as read located at the left side of the top on your New messages page if you wanted to mark as read all your messages. 5. or how do i draw a vertical line on my page to separate it into for content division on each side.

Vertical lines can be displayed by creating a table, and setting some properties to it.

This is an example of a simple one row - two column table (external border color is white by default), separated by a vertical line, thus creating two cells, each one of them can contain text, images, audio, video, etc.

Switch to edit mode, study the code of this table

Please feel free to change values of properties of this table which are explained in right cell.

  • Notice wikicode {| creates the table, and wikicode |} closes the table
  • Wikicode |- starts a row.
  • Wikicode | creates a cell into the row.
  • "width" property is set to 100%. Try other values. See what happens with size of table.
  • "cellpadding" property creates a separation between border and content inside cells of the table (this table has two cells). Try other values.
  • "rules" property has "cols" attribute, this mean, only vertical cell borders will be displayed. (other attributes are: rows, none, all). Try them on.

Karuna

Hmm...more confusion. Is this page in addition to: 1. wikieducator, 2. the class site which already had a discussion page and is already in my favorites and so easy to find (unlike this one that is just in an email that I won't be able to find in future)? I have unfortunately downloaded Google Chrome and it has deleted lots of my regular buttons so I'm having trouble finding anything that is new. There is no favorites star on it so I don't know how to add favorites anymore. I have left an email in a box about something else on Google to try to get instructions to uninstall it and get the old version back but I don't have much hope that I'll actually get a response. If anyone knows what I can do to get rid of Google Chrome and go back to what I had I would be very grateful to hear about it. Just so you know, I have a very short fuse with new stuff and frustration with technology in particular, since my Lymes disease has affected my brain chemistry so severely. I'm sorry if I appear to be negative most of the time, I just get SO frustrated. I am actually excited to be learning how to do this but it is SO slow and not fun. I'm intending that it will be fun once I actually can use the technology without going in circles. For example, the 45 minutes given for time each day tends to be more like 2-3 days for me. Since I don't like being on the computer these hours and hours of not having it do what I want are very draining and discouraging. So you know that I must be very, very persistent and insistent to still be trying. I am proud of that. I regret that you may hear much frustration from me while I'm pushing myself. I would prefer to offer you inspiration. Perhaps accepting myself where I am, in my frustration, might be inspiring to some of you.   • Color of font. This is a red colored text, you can change value of "color" property to many color names like blue, purple, fuschia, yellow, salmon, green, brown, coral, cyan, orange, etc. Just click on [edit] link (right side of your name), see codes for this text, play with other color names, save and see what happens :-)

OK, let's see if this fixes that--Carol No....I set up a signature in preferences, but it is not showing up here....

  • Hi Carol, please click on "my preferences" and see what is written in Signature box. If box is empty, write again your desired personalized signature. Click on "Save" button. Sometimes you need to "refresh" your browser's cache in order to get changes done, read carefully the instructions located in the bottom lines of "my preferences" page. Here is a transcription of those instructions: 
Note - After saving, you may have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Mozilla / Firefox / Safari:
hold Shift while clicking Reload, or press either Ctrl-F5 or Ctrl-R (Command-R on a Macintosh); Konqueror: click

My signature box says "Carol Cross", I don't have raw signature checked, and my language is English. But the signature isn't showing up...unless it does now...Nope

I'm using Foxfire and followed the browser cache procedure, but that still hasn't changed anything.

Well, I'm still have the signature problem. However, I was doing the Day 4 assignments today and leaving comments on various other participants pages, etc. But I noticed that on the participants page, my name isn't blue and clickable and the learning contract doesn't say signed, even though I sent mine in. Is there something else that I need to do to have my participant information updated?

Hi. I got a welcome message from Nedal (Wikineighbour) on my user page. I have three questions: 1. Did he post that by editing my user page? (I am guessing so) 2. When I am done viewing his message do I have to edit it out? 3. What is the easiest way to respond to him? If I click on his name it takes me to his user page.   • Regarding to your third question, I would add that since WE is all about networking, I would leave all your responses to comments from your wikineighbors either in your main page or under the discussion tab so that you have access to these people should you later want to collaborate. For me, should someone visit my page and not be interested in what I'm doing - heaven forbid (smile) - they still can see my wikineighbors' comments should they want to collaborate with them instead. Either way, it's all good! Plus, if you leave your responses all in the same place, you can remember what you talked about with that particular person. Moreover, if you get in the habit of emailing your wikineighbors you're depriving others of your worthy ideas, beliefs, attitudes, etc.--Benjamin Stewart 20:28, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Well, to be honest I did not exactly know what to expect. I was just reading different online content and searching for free online Econ textbooks and I kinda sorta ended up here. 

  2. How have your expectations changed, as a result of your experience and skills development? Explain.

Yes, now I have some expectations! I have so far not been successful in finding Econ content that would be an acceptable substitute for a textbook here in the wiki world. Perhaps I have just not searched correctly yet.... but if it actually is not there then I can envision setting up the framework for an WE Econ course. 

  3. Analyse what you have learned so far about the wiki experience.

It is intimidating at first... but these modules are great. I am learning at my own pace and am confident that I can become proficient enough someday to make helpful contributions. 

  4. How could it be applied to your work context and professional development?

I think this was answered above... I can easily see integrating WE-created content into my courses.

  • This is my third WE workshop. The first one I took was during a busy time and although it said you only need a short time everyday, it seemed to take me forever.

The second one was easier to follow. I am here because I still think I need to learn more. For example someone pointed out that the pictures I uploaded on my wikieducator page should be put on mediawiki and they did it for me. But actually I am not sure of that part. Also videos, if I would like to add something how should it be registered. Maybe we are getting to this later. -- Nadia El Borai 12:50, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

I had experienced a gap between my initial expectations and this first experience on the wiki, I can not understand the logic , not yet, I am trying hard , I think I will in the next couple of days. But before the workshop I thought it was much more difficult , I thought that it was only for a few very skilled persons.
  1. How have your expectations changed, as a result of your experience and skills development? I found lots of tips and help from the group , even if I am not responding I am reading it and try the solutions like for the signature.
  2. Analyse what you have learned so far about the wiki experience? Still early to comment, I feel I can do it but need more time
  3. How could it be applied to your work context and professional development ? I think i need this skills to chose the best e-learning methodology to develop in my profession, specially with in-service teacher training

I searched "Economics" in WikiEducator and found one sentence. Does that mean there is basically nothing written for econ in WE yet? I doubt that... probably if I search under specific topics I will find lots of content. Still it would seem there would be links from a search of Economics to economic-related topics.

I clicked on the history of the page and found the one sentence was uploaded in January 2009.

I clicked on the contributor and found he is a teacher from Kenya.

  1.  Have you experienced a gap between your initial expectations and your experience on the wiki? Explain.

Yes, my initial expectation was being able to create the same content in WE as I can in wikispaces. I am still trying to close this gap by learning new code.

  • Brian, your expectation is consistent with much of the feedback we've received from other learners. When I first tried out Wiki Spaces, and tried it out with more than three people in a group, it was then that I experienced its serious limitations (i.e., a great deal of time lag / page hanging) during the "save" process. It really got in the way of building the creative editing energy - this free-flowing energy is one of the things I really love about WikiEd; the other thing is the supportive and responsive Community.   2. How have your expectations changed, as a result of your experience and skills development? Explain.

I´ve learned to enjoy the process a little more and to be more patient. I have not changed my expectations as far was what I want to do, I am just accepting that it might take more time than I originally had anticipated.

I´ve met some great people in WE who share similar interests and I´ve learned more code that enables me to do more with my wiki pages. I am just now getting more feedback on my project that has been a great help as well. 

  4. How could it be applied to your work context and professional development?

My project is designed to meet my professional objectives as well as offer an open course to the community.

Explain. Well this may helpme to improve the content and to improve my knowledge, just folow over an incredible user on a Talk/cont hyperlink and learned a lot about second life and education


Exploring Recent Changes 1.Go to: Special:RecentChanges 2.Are you able to identify what's going on in the wiki? Looks an ongoing process , go on and on for ever , add more things, replace, correct, it is never finished 3.What do you see that interests you? Explain the possibility of work with others 4.Click on a User Name (that is blue, not red) - what did you learn about this WE user? One got a recognition on The User Page Expo , other one is commited to improve education, a very generous discourse and a great majority are EFL teachers.

  • I have been following this workshop step by step. More than workshop activities, I have read feedback, Introduction pages and I have found interesting user pages too. I think there are too much to learn with all of you. I have a question regarding to image example.jpg. I reverted the image and I did not get the image from flowers as of Gita's image. I have this image four times in my sandbox but only three of them were the flowers. On the page image:example.jpg I found the image was not changed. After that I had to download and upload the image to get the right image. Now, after I have reverted the image again, due to get a better resolution, the image of the flowers is shown at top page and a image of Adiana is shown in the thumbnail column. If you look at some linked pages they do not show the right image. My sandbox is showing all the four images as the flowers. What is happening with this file? Looking at File history we can see many updates of this picture. My suggestion is to lock the page and with this people could make less mistakes when upload an image.

  1. Have you experienced a gap between your initial expectations and your experience on the wiki?
    Yes, I took L4C12 workshop last year thinking in to learn how to edit in a Wiki only, I thought in use all skills learned only for edit WE pages.
  2. How have your expectations changed, as a result of your experience and skills development?
    Now, I have realized that WikiEducator is not only a wiki where I can edit pages, I am sure WE is a community of great people willing to help each other and where I can share my knowledge and learn from others too.
  3. Analyse what you have learned so far about the wiki experience.
    Now, I have learned that edition skills are tools only, I have met great people and I have learned that these skills are useful to help WikiNeighbours. I have being helped for other partners and I have learned looking at wonderful user pages too.
  4. How could it be applied to your work context and professional development?
    Now, my goal is to help with the spanish instance and I am thinking how to use WikiEducator for develop useful tools for student and Engineers like me.

  • Brian, I've visited your page - cool resource! I've also added the "Economics" category to your page - open it up, and see the syntax (the link goes to: http://www.wikieducator.org/Category:Economics). In WikiEd, we use categories, so that that content can be 'grouped', and you can see what other resources there are in the category. In 2009, we expect a considerable pickup in this activity, particularly as WikiEd as a project moves to an independent OER Foundation / International Centre of Open Education (still maintaining its relationship with Commonwealth of Learning).   • I am going to offer two different approaches to school disciplinary matters - one an understanding of bullying and ways of coping with the issue, the second involves the disaggregation of disciplinary problems in school. I hope one or other or both will proe to be of interest to some teachers, parents or students.
  • Keiran, this is a very valuable resource. I am aware that in Canada (where I live), bullying is a big problem in the schools, and any resource which can increase awareness, provide options and 'education' will be much-sought after, and valuable. Hi All! It seems I managed to get there finally (two weeks later than schedule, but better late than never80px-Wikineighbour V2.png) Now I realize how much I've learnt from you all by jumping into the deep end of the pool. I subscribed to an advanced workshop before I joined a more step-by-step workshop (for young wiki learners80px-Wikineighbour V2.png)
