How did your gifted kid do - seem similar to other gifted kids in your program? *
One option that doesn't seem to be a choice on the Brevard site is part-time eLearning at School from Home (local school) + Brevard Virtual School. That would provide interaction local school connection with a teacher and other kids without requiring full day online participation. As a long time online instructor, all-day online would be a really tough way to go for everyone - kids, teachers and families. Some connection is hugely beneficial.

- Genius Hour / Passion project - kids have to determine what they really care about. Most people struggle with this including kids in Dana's careers classes that I have attended. I am less interested in the actual project. Most of the information about the actual process of the first steps seems to be "You'll know it when you see it". What is it that kids really care about? - kids know what grade they can get on a unit because they see in advance what is required for A, B, C - friend at Creekside did this for 7th grade Science. Pre-test, several tasks / activities starting with C. Do more, higher level activities for B the eligible to do A activities. Post-test. Kids who did well in the pre-test started with higher level activities. I think there was some choice at each level but some work was required. I thought this was great but she said it was a lot of work for here. Getting set up would be, but I thought it would be more interesting than whole group instruction for her as well as for the kids. But I'm not a middle school classroom teacher, :o)

Innovation Generation (STEM) Grants in North America
The Innovation Generation Grant (IGG) program is designed to inspire students to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and increase engagement in STEM careers by providing support to education programs for elementary through university students and teachers in the United States. The 2016 Innovation Generation grant cycle is now open through Wednesday, March 2, 2016.

Reluctant readers, text messages and iPads
- Carol Rainbow, retired ICT teacher/ICT adviser I used mobile phones with a group of seven to eight year old reluctant readers. The idea was for them to focus on reading and replying to text messages - the children's attitude to reading and writing improved and the children really enjoyed it. Mobiles engaged them in a way that books did not. From the teacher's point of view it took a lot of time preparing messages in 160 characters that pupils could respond to. I spent hours devising treasure hunts, splitting stories into very short lines, finding short riddles, curricular questions, sequencing exercises and more. 160 characters is not a lot to get useful information which requires a response in.

Art, Design and Engineering
2012.09.27 - It is really important that technology be integrated into everything - not held separately. However, I appreciate the need to promote the application of technology in teaching and learning in a big way. Technology is the school's middle name. I think you make a bigger statement by NOT having a Tech Lab per se.
How about this? Shift the "tech lab" to a more applied technology venue. Have a bunch of interesting extra tech equipment in the Art room - scanners, big format printer, video camera and movie editing software, even science instruments (because there will be interesting stuff to see). Much of the expanded integration of technology "stuff" fits best with Art. Even basic programming and CAD could be included into Art / Design / Engineering. I don't know what the usage of that room is. Worst case - you need two of them. Application and integration of technology is the objective so do that from the outset.
