<u'WELCOME</u>
Every one is invited to read this article on Writing Skills for Std. X students of the State Board of Maharashtra, India.
It will certainly be of help to students appearing for the SSC Examination.<u</u>
INTRODUCTION
Mastering all the language skills in English is of utmost importance as it is the "Lingua Franca"&the most widely used language in the world.
Emphasis is given to Communication Skills as language is used to express thoughts, ideas & feelings.Hence the English paper SSC for the students is of 80 marks & 20 marks are reserved for the Oral Examination, which is conducted in the respective schools.
We will now consider how to get a mastery over the writing skills required to score maximum marks in the English paper.[Marks -25]
Objectives
- To enable the student to learn writing skills required for the examination.
- To help the student to be able ot write letters.
- The student is able to write reports, fact file, information transfer.
- To enable the candidate to prepare leaflet & an advertisement.
TheE nglish paper has 8 questions to be answered & writing skills are tested in Q.no.6,7&8.
In Q no.6a you have to write an Informal Letter OR a Formal Letter.Marks for this answer are 5.
Things to remember 1. Write your address without disclosing your identity.Use XYZ for your name
2 .Subject to be written after the receiver's address only in an official letter ¬ in a letter to the Editor.
3. End the letter with-Yours faithfully,
Example of Official Letter
XYZ
Your Address
23,May 2011.
The Sub-Inspector of Police,
Bandra
Police Station,
Mumbai-400050.
Subject:- Violation of permissible limits of noise.
Sir,
I regret to inform you that the deadline of 10 p.m for bursting crackers & the permissible sound levels are being violated during Diwali celebrations. Unfortunately no care
is taken to punish the offenders..Though NGOs & ALMs had chalked out their strategy by distributing circulars containing numbers of police control room &their members were
taking turns to patrol the streets &see that crackers did not exceed the prescribed decibel limits, in our area no limit was followed. The old ,the sick & the young children were the
most troubled ones.
I request you to take steps to ensure that people are not troubled by a few law breakers.I look forward to your timely intervention
Yours faithfully,
XYZ

Example of a speech.[World HealthDay]
The following is a speech delivered by XYZ on the occasion of World Health Day.
Respected Principal, teachers & my dear friends. A very good morning to you. On the occasion of World Health Day, I wish to expess my views on the importance of exercise. We are familiar with the saying 'A sound mind in a sound body',but our life style has turned us into couch potatoes.
Sitting in front of a computer or the TV using the car fora short trip to the near-by store& using lifts instead of the stairs has contributed to our inactivity.
We are conscious of the mistakes we are committing but we continue to make the same mistakes.
On the occasion of World Health Day,I request you to change your schedule & include a programme of exercise Start slowly..... & build up your work out.If you are doing some light exercises, move up to more moderate ones.According to scientistss, 60 minutes of physical activity every day is required to stay healthy.
Physical activity need not be strenuous. This goal can be achieved by including some sort of exercise in you daily routine. It can be as simple as just a walk in the morningin your compound.Maintain this routine for three months & see the difference.
So friends, start immediately & don't give up.Thank you for listening to me so patiently.
Tte option for this question is Dialogue Writing. You are epected to write about 10 questions & responses.Example of a dialogue between a student & a teacher. You are not to use inverted commas. Marks-5.

T Adil,no subject is boring. You do:n't like thesehsubjects & so you find them boring. You have not learnt these languages.
o
S :I find it difficult to read the language.
T :You must realize that you have to get through in the languages & so you might as well start taking interest in these subjects.
S : But Ma;am, the teachers talk in Hindi which I can't understand.
T :I will give you some study skills to master the languages.Write 2 paragraphs of any lesson. While you are writing, read aloud & understand what you write.you will find the work interesting& learning will be a pleasure.
S : Thank you .I will try this measure from today.
T :Remember 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step:

My Reflection
I joined the eL4C50 workshop to learn wiki skills at the insistence of my sister,Dr. Kalpana Gupte. I wish to do some thing in the field of teaching to make the world a better place to live in. It is said that a teacher is a student till the end & I wish to be the change that I want to bring about. Let us all learn to make our lives sublime from the lives of great men & leave footprints on the Sands of Time Like H W Longfellow has rightly taught us. A big thank you to Dr.Sharmaji, Patricia Schlicht, Dr.Gita Mathur&Michael for the Guidance& support given. It helped me to make my user page.A very big thank you to my grand son, Mohit Deshpande, who taught me how to add images to my user page. I wish to extend my gratitude to Dr. Sharmaji who very kindly rectified the errors I had made. Thank you Sir for your encouraging words. It will help me in doing the learning project.
I registered for the eL4C51 workshop to improve the wiki skills I had learnt. I hope to make a second learning project. shortly .I have yet to make a decision about the topic. There are many things that I need to learn.
