We know that by now you have been able to go through your materials on the session on Gender considerations for youth enterprise training. What is your own definition of gender, sex and gender equality?
I am like many other people thinking that gender and sex are the same thing - male and female. gender equality by my understanding is not discriminating against any male or female with regards to livelihoods. human rights i think have a part to support in equality.
Dear K. Tembo, thnsk for your reply giving your own definition of gender, sex and gender balance. I also want to let you know that yourdefinitions are right and I am pleased to know that you have some information about the three gender terms under discussion.
However, I also want to make an addition on the definitions that you have given as follows:
Gender is Social differences between women and men that are:
- Learned
- Change over time within a society and between societies
Sex is Biological differences between women and men that are universal and Gender Equality includes the same human and workers’ rights, equal value and fair distribution of work load, responsibilities and opportunities, decision making and sharing of income without any discrimination of sex, age, religion, race. Hi Simonda, I have read through the materials and i must say, its pretty interesting to know about the issues of gender and how often the terms of gender and sex have been misinterpreted. I take keen interest in these issues. In my own definition, gender means acquired roles that someone receives in a community they are born they can be changed ,sex means male or female,i.e, you are either born male or female, you can not change who you are and gender equality means equal opportunities for both males and female
Belinda thank you for that. I didnt know the exact definition of gender. it is a word commonly used but with no proper meaning.

Thank you for your message and to realise how knowledgable on issues of gender and in particular to the definitions on gender and sex. I totally agree with you that gender roles can be changed if people want because there are no biological or sex elements in them. For example, both a man and a woman can carry out household chores such as drawing water, collecting fuirewood, taking care of children, cooking, tending to farming activities etc whereas, sex/bilogical roles such as breastfeeding a baby, getting pregnant can not bechanged to bo done by men. Equally pregnanting a woman can only be done by a man who biologically is the one who produces sperms. kindly also look at the discussion that I sent to K. Tembo on the definitions. my view on gender equality is that we should instead talk about gender equity because male and female are very different. the male has more body mass in fact and can do male high level energy tasks than the female

As for gender roles, yes some men have more body mass but there are also some women who have who can do high level ebergy tasks than men. Gendwer equality Brian is not about body mass but it is about giving equal opportuninities, responsibilities, decision making and sharing of income in an equal manner as long as people do the same kind of work regardless of sex or age.
