Blueskin Bay FM

A student run, community radio station based at Warrington School

Present goals:

  • To transmit content from a small (500mW) FM transmitter to the Blueskin Bay community
  • To broadcast local programmes from time to time (possibly up to 100% of the time)
  • To run on open and free principles and software - during school hours - 8-4 weekdays
  • Use Creative Commons licensed music as the default sound

Future goals:

  • To become a repository for Creative Commons licensed material
    • Sharing local, national and international music and audio
  • Stream content to a wider audience

Progress timeline

  • October 2009: invited to apply for funding from Waikouaiti Coast Community Board
  • October 2009: Conditional approval from Warrington School, Blueskin News and Puketapu Radio
  • October 2009: Project announced under the working title Blueskin FM and public meeting to launch the station called for 2 November 2009, to be held at 7pm at Warrington School
  • 2 November 2009: Meeting held (you can read the original agenda)
    • station agreed to be launched
    • name Blueskin Bay FM 88.2 chosen
    • organisation and personnel established
    • funding application to Waikouaiti Coast Community Board filled out and sent
  • 16 January 2010: Aerial raised on school roof, transmitter turned on.
  • 3 February 2010: First broadcast by children at Warrington School
  • 2012: Meeting to re-establish mission of BBFM and aim towards streaming content to a wider audience
  • August 2012 empowered by Open Source and moved to a hosted Wordpress site blueskinbayfm.co.nz
    • Podcasts and graphics of student work uploaded

Membership

Any member of the public, family or organisation is welcome to apply for membership on payment of $10 per annum subscription. This allows the member to participate in decision making, be involved in broadcasting or receive on-air promotion/advertising of their activities.
