I have just been updating my OER proposal and it's more or less ready for consumption. I'd be grateful to hear your comments and guidance on where and how to link it to the main WikiEducator content.
Thanks,

Dear Wayne,
Dr. Lakshman Nonis from Seychelles registered for the L4C workshop which started on 23rd June. He had made a mistake when entering his email address. His correct email address is:

He was very happy to open an account on WikiEducator. When he didn't get an email from you I checked the participants list and found that his email address is not correct. Hope he will not be late to participate for this workshop.

Hi Wayne, I was trying to understand how to use maths formulae to write matrices on the following page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Formula When I tried it using the given syntax it didn't work. Then to see the syntax I checked the page in 'Edit Mode' and copied the code. Then I pasted it there instead of onto my sandbox. I tried to check the history for any changes. I could not see any. Please check the page and make sure that I have not changed any thing.
Sorry for troubling you.
I am trying to find a way to write matrices on wiki using wiki syntax. I'm getting an error message. Please rty to help me when you have time.
Thanks.

Hi Godfrey,
Were you using \begin{array} \end{array}? There seems to be a problem parsing those commands. I will do some digging and get back to you.
Thanks Wayne. This formula problem is hindering me from preparing the exercises on different pages. Please have a look at the content on my lesson plan on Matrix Algebra and see whether it is OK. Please give me your feedback about it. Thanks again. Godfrey

Hi, Am Phillip Samani from Solomon Islands. We have just completed our L4C workshop yesterday. It was great! Although it was a beginners L4C workshop, I learned a lot. It was just fantastic. There are only two queries:
- Is there any other workshop coming up again? I'd like to learn more on L4C apart from my self navigation on the wikieducator site.
- Is there any other way we can editing the type of text on our page(s).
Phillip Samani Solomon Islands
Hi Phillip - I'm --Randy Fisher 19:01, 23 February 2008 (UTC) and am jumping in for Wayne here...
The short answer to Q1. is Yes! - Another L4C workshop is starting up on Monday - you could join that....Also, now as you are practicing your wiki skills...when you feel comfortable, you may also want to help some of the Newbies! We actually want to encourage this...because we've found that people 'catch on' more quickly when they connect with other community users.
Regarding Q2. I'm not sure I understand it...can you clarify please?

Error in the Icon Assess.gif image (1)
There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.
When reading the “All iDevices” page I saw that if was an error in the Icon_Assess.gif file, the image was not showing, just the link. I went to the Image:Icon_Assess.gif page and I saw that the last version was not correct, showing an image size of 0x0 pixels and a file size of 34 KB. I copy the line displayed:
23:00, 13 February 2008 Polly howlett (Talk | contribs) 0×0 34 KB Lesson Plan Templatefor Practicum
Instead of reverting to the original image that you uploaded (I was not sure if this was going to work), I uploaded the original image and downloaded again. I put as well a brief explanation on the discussions page of the image.
The error was solved and the icon was showing properly in the “All iDevices” page, but with a white background surrounding the image. Using a graphics editor I did set this white background as transparent, and uploaded the file again, but the white background was still showing.
Finally I decided to revert to the original image that you uploaded in July 2007. The white background does not show now, but it shows a white square surrounding the image.
Two questions:
- Did I act correctly trying to fix the error of the icon not showing?
- What has to be done to remove white (or any colour) backgrounds from images?

Back Button (1)
There have been no changes to this discussion for at least 14 days. If it is concluded, you may want to write a summary.
Hi Wayne,
Going through the tutorial. It's very well presented and easy to follow. I am quickly getting up to speed. By way of practice, may I ask you here a specific question; how does the browser back button feature in editing a Wiki? Should one avoid it as a short cut? Sometimes I notice that in the course of editing I am left high and dry with no links back to the page I am editing (for instance when uploading an image). I have probably done something wrong to result in that situation but when it happens, the back button comes to the rescue.
David
Hi David,
The back button in the browser functions in the normal way -- namely going back to the previous url address that you viewed in that window during the current session.
Using the browser's back button can cause issues when trying to remember that state of the local data and that which has been saved to the server. Remember that unless you click on the save button - edits are not yet saved to the server -- so it's a good idea to get into the habit of saving your edits before clicking on the back button.
Not sure if you were using the "show preview" button -- which does not save the changes to the server -- so watch out for this one as well. The preview button is intended to check whether you're happy with the layout before saving changes to the server.
Pretty soon you'll get the hang of how this works. I'm pretty impressed with your user page - you're showing early signs of becoming a wiki guru!
Cheers W

Thanks for the welcome to the WikiEducator community.
Quick question for you....what is your position or preference on linking to relevant content that is hosted elsewhere vs. having content hosted here on WikiEducator? I would like to contribute some things to WikiEducator but am not sure about whether to link, repost, or stick with "new" stuff that isn't hosted elsewhere? (As an example I have a new course on Mobile Tech for Differentiating Instruction in K-12 currently at http://mobiletech.wikispaces.com, as well as lots of stuff elsewhere.)
I'm also interested in the Handouts4Teachers project, but it's not clear to me whether this is an active project and/or where the actual content is. I'm still trying to get a sense of the content and community here. :)
Kfasimpaur: that link seems to go to a commercial page about virus software or something.
There was a typo in the URL. Sorry about that. It's fixed now.
Hi Kfasimpaur,
Much of our work involves -ICTs4Development --- we have a keen interest in mobile learning. You're developing a great resource here. WikiEducator (WE) is keen to expand the number of PD workshop materials and the mobile learning workshop would be a valuable addition to the project.
I see that you're using a CC-BY-SA license so if you thinking of moving the materials or creating a duplicate copy on WE -- we'd be very happy to have you join our community:-D
You gain two immediate advantages with WE:
- no adverts
- Wiki to pdf technology to produce printed handouts directly from the Wiki for your workshops.
You should also have a chat with User:Ktucker who is doing some interesting stuff on the mobile learning front. I'm also very keen to encourage the collaborative development of content designed for delivery on mobile devices. Perhaps in the future we could secure donor funding for developing tailored exports from Mediawiki to formats suitable for mobile devices.
Handouts4Teachers is currently in the design and conceptualization phases -- not much content yet, but now is a good time to join and help in fine tuning the planning for this project.
Within the next couple of weeks, I'll be uploading a few example lessons which were developed by a colleague at Christs College in New Zealand - we've been waiting for the Wiki ==> pdf functionality to be implemented. We will be promoting the Handouts4Teachers initiative in a big way this year.
We would welcome any help and/or advice you can provide.
Chat to you soon.

Dear Wayne,
You may have noticed, I have created a small resource for supporting distance teachers to write better self-learning materials. This will be used as a resource in the forthcoming COL workshop at Bangladesh. We are also developing a template for the workshop participants to create their page automatically.
I tried the automatic PDF aggregator. It worked for the help file, but never worked for any of my pages on W2T3D. I have reported the bug.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Regards, Sanjaya
Hi Sanjaya --
Yip I saw the W2T3D developments -- great resource and thanks for contributing these materials.
The pdf generate "breaks" because it is not able to parse HTML. I suspect your pages are breaking because of the html embedded in the Navigation templates.
There is an easy fix -- you can use a print specific template for the pdf generator. In the print version you do not need the navigation template -- so you can suppress the printing of the template by creating an "empty" template for the print version.
To for example:
Template:Navigation_Foo can be replaced by Template:Navigation_Foo_print (print is case sensitive.) when printing.
Simply create & save a blank template by placing a carriage return.
See for example how I fixed this for the pedagogical tempaltes:
Template:Objectives and Template:Objectives_print (for the print version).

Hi Wayne,
I'm putting this here as am taking it that Eric has got you on his watch list and it concerns both of you.
I've been talking to a one of my mates who is Eric's = on the accessgrid (AG) . If you don't know it, it's a way of tying together real rooms using virtual stuff.
Mentioned to Chris Willing (and he is) about using the AG to tie together Alexandria and the runners up (Capetown, Atlanta) for the Wikimania conference next year. It's a bit fatter than Skype and IRC but basically the same IP technologies. We're also talking , if we get as far as linking, about how we might be able to plug a few of the sessions into some public broadcasters like CBC at your end and ABC over here.
I thought I should mention this now as, with a bit of planning, and some better comms we should be able to run something rather special next year, if we have the time to plan (both agenda and link up).
It's getting on the night before Xmas and nothing will happen until after the silly season, so in the meantime hope you'll have a lovely white christmas, while we have a hot one. --Simonfj 05:23, 13 December 2007 (CET)

Hi Wayne, Just trolling and making a few edits. The first one being to link to your user page to this domain, rather than just COL. You might want to ask your mates to do samo. It's a bit distracting; the only option to be sent onwards.
Notice you're on the advisory board (AB) to the WMF, which hopefully means you've met Sue Gardner or will shortly. Do you have a comms manager? I'm after someone like Sandy O from meta. I'm also interested in whether you have a syop/admin who is across the geek stuff (tools).
One thing which is perfectly obvious around the WikiFoundation traps is that their communities' comms is a dog's breakfast, (please don't mind my terminology. I mean no offence). The primary problem is that every conversation is split between a users talk page and a (let's call them) mentor's. (admin in wikispeak). You can see it if you want to leave a message on my user page. I'll reply on yours and so we can be certain that no one will learn a bloody thing. (the bloody is optional).
So I can see where you're going with the Liquid threads. But I'm sure you have wider expectations than that if your on the WMF advisory. A starting point? Just click on the Communication Projects Group. This is the attempt to bring the Wikifoundation Projects comms to a head, so if you'd like to encourage the movement to include WE you might ask a comms person to put a flag in the sand on this page.
I think, eventually, the AB are going to see the need for a Forum as a wider approach to threads. So I'll point you at this one to ruminate on over Christmas. minus the ads of course. It's around 250 on Alexa's top 500, so you know I'm not trying to introduce a tool which isn't link home for the next generation, today.
Enough, You can see I talk to too much. Please understand I've been watching too many threads say the same things, in a different place, a different time, so from my perspective it may be time to put Humpty Dumpty back to together. It doesn't seem to be hard to see how, as long as we think in terms of global groups rather than national or project domains. The hard thing is using the right tool for the right job. So many tools, so many opinions and one size won't fit all. We have a lot to learn, and measure.
Merry Christmas and a happy New year. P.S. Would you have a play with this page. I always leave (so much) room for improvement. This one might help Stephen Downes and Co to feel a little included.
Hi Erik,
Is it OK for me to make a change on the Open Ed. Declaration page

pre-workshop activities
Hi Wayne,
I think the first milestone is pretty much there. It may still need the odd bit of tweaking but I think it needs another set of eyes to give another perspective. http://wikieducator.org/Organizing_pre-workshop_logistics_activities. As for the preworkshop activity for participants I've added it to the Registration Form resource under http://wikieducator.org/Participants_Invitations and I've also tested it by updating my own user page following the template and am pretty happy with the result.
