Hello Dmccabe I was most impressed with your project/pilot in using wiki technology with students. Hope you don't mind the new user welcome template - but am looking forward to working with you on this project.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm gradually completing the process of moving over here and I will be a regular user in the Spring term. CheersDmccabe 05:25, 16 November 2007 (CET)

Hi Declan, I checked those links. I gave the following names to the pages when I was tesing the links.

  • TestBio
  • TestBio2

However, I did not save them. If these pages are created please delete them.
If I use your template, do I get all these stuff with it?
If it is so, then it will be lot easier for me.

Thanks--Godfrey--3.10pm--11 June 2008

Hi Godfrey,

I'm glad you find the templates useful. Neither page was created. The pages are only created when you first save. If you use the template, you do get all of the stuff that comes with it. By all means make a page to try it out, I can easily delete it at your request. You can very easily copy the templates to new page names, and then change them to suite your needs. Let me know if you want help with setup. Cheers, Dmccabe 02:46, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

The viral nature of sharing ideas ... (1)

Hi Declan,

Isn't it amazing to see how the open model has a viral characteristics in spreading across the community.

BTW -- I've been meaning to get this info to you - -but drowning as usual. All good of course.

WE has a new template for structured content. Something you may want to implement in the navigation of the Biology materials. A little easier to use and has some neat features;

See:

Navigations templates for structured content

Cheers

Thanks Wayne,

I'm up to all sorts of non WE things myelf. I'll pop in and look seriously into the template at some point, but no ETA on that for a while. It is amazing to se how things are growing.Dmccabe 00:38, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Dear Prof,

Hope you're doing well and still on your working hard on your project. I am also trying to introduce more educators to the WikiEducator platform here in my community and hope there will be more contributions from us in Africa here as well.

regards,
Dennis.

Hi Dennis,

Currently I'm working on a river ecology project with 21 students; a different world compared to my work here. At night I'm working up a short video for Wayne M. describing my WE project. Sorry for the long delay in response. I wish you well with your work, and I'll be a more regular contributor here again in January 09. cheers Dmccabe 02:49, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Declan, I slightly modofied your template to design my "Learning Design Template. I hope you don't mind. Please don't get annoyed for not informing you prior to doing so. I was just experimenting using my "Test Page". Then managed to finish with some thing agreeable for the time being.

Please have a look at it when you get time. http://wikieducator.org/ContentDesign:Introduction_to_Matrix_Algebra

Thanks Godfrey

Hi Godfrey,

That's great! If I have something worth using, by all means use it. I'm not a computer expert, so I feel free to get code from where ever I can. I think it's the wiki way and certainly nothing that would bother or annoy me in any way. I have brought some things over from wikia, and also from a WE user named Dennis. And perhaps I'll finally learn Matrix Algebra from your content. Ecologists use Leslie Matrices to model populations with several life history stages, and predictable probabilities of transition from one stage to the next. Good luck with your project, all the bestDmccabe 02:44, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Dear Professor,

I did some editing on your page. I moved the info box down. I thought this might let it look better. I did some editing on my page too. Please let me know if you want to revert back to the previous or maintain the change I did.

Thank you.
Dennis.

Looks good! Thanks; Declan

Hi Markos,

Great to hear from you. I have seen some of the wonderful work you are doing with MS Word and MS Excel. Keep up the good work. I must confess I had to look up ICT; sounds like what I call IT?

I like the idea of colaborating on a project at some point. If nothing else, we can each borrow resources from the other. So far, my students and I have formed a working group, but have not really colaborated extensively outside of that group. We have had help from the WE community and have borrowed code, format, templates etc, but I have not put the time in to really see how our materials might integrate more fully with the work of others. With my current time constraints I must postpone such ideas for a while.

Your New Collaborative Video (15)

Hey,

Hey! I see you've used the new collaborative video feature on your wiki. How did you enjoy using it? Have you thought of maybe adding it on to your favorite articles? Are hoping students add on media clips to the Video?

Let me know, Avigail

Hi Avigail,

Thanks for the interest; some things like the termites just demand a video. When appropriate I certainly intend for my students to add clips. However because I don't want to add another layer of tech onto a course that is not in any way a computer science course.

I have a hard time using the Video editor; it's not intuitive to me; I may get to it once the course ends. I have used the MS movie maker software and it works well for me. Dmccabe 18:47, 14 February 2008 (CET)

Hi Declan,

Interesting feedback ~ certainly I understand that when you keep adding 'tech' to the activities, there's a point that people feel overloaded.

Regarding the video, I've used MovieMaker, and it's a real dog...and memory hog...would be nice to try something different.

Hi Randy, I have a little puredigital video camera with the usb connection on the side; I find that I can bypass the video editor and upload short clips directly and that works for me. What other video editors have you tried thet you might recomend?Dmccabe 17:11, 15 February 2008 (CET)

Hi RANDY,

I just got my hands on Pinnacle. Still a memory hog, but easier to use than MovieMaker. I'm test running it for work. So far so good. If interested I'll give you more feedback after some use.Dmccabe 03:16, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi again Avigail,

we use clips when they best illustratean idea; like in the Cloud creations for example. I have not considered adding outside media, but I rule nothing out :) It all comes down to time.Dmccabe 03:22, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for the heads up about the format buttons. Bit different than the usual wikimedia approach. So is this way of "talking". regards, --Simonfj 00:31, 20 January 2008 (CET)

Yep, the chat thing is a bit quirky and cumbersom; I can never tell if I have a real new message or it is recyclng one I have read, but the positives outweigh that for me at least. I particularlly like that you can't edit without logging in. It makes it easier to track contributions when working with a group.Dmccabe

The 'summarize' prompt is a wee bit bizare also. In a few weeks when neither one of us has commented on this thread, will it really need a summary?Dmccabe

Hi,

I like the WikiEducator, but I am still a little confused with all its applications. For example, how do I start a discussion with someone without using the link you gave us in the e-mail?

Thanks Kacie

Hi Kacie,

You can go to their user page and hit the 'discussion' tab. You can do that by pasting this: http://www.wikieducator.org/User:YYYYY into your browser and replace the YYYYY with the user name. Or if you go to the history tab of any page that person has worked on and click on the 'talk' next to their name it will jump you straight to their discussion page. Cheers, Dmccabe 23:41, 6 January 2008 (CET)

Hello Professor McCabe- I knew I recognized Wiki when you sent us that email but it wasn't until I got on and was looking around that I realized why. Over the summer I worked on setting up a wikipage for some of the people I worked with. It isnt exactly the same as this but it was similar. I hope that it will help me understand how all of this works easier. Hope you are enjoying the break! Thanks, Kim

Hello Professor McCabe- I was a little confused by the wikieducator at first but I think I am beginning to understand how it works. I looked at some of the labs the previous classes created and they look really interesting! See you monday! Thanks, Brighid

on any user page (actually any page), just click on the 'discussion' tab, and you can start a discussion or reply to an existing one.
