The Next Step
Where to from here?
Otago Polytechnic is in the process of implementing its open education policy. If you are involved in preparing teaching resources as an academic staff member, be aware that releasing them in OER format wherever possible is highly desirable, and the sooner you develop these skills, the better.
Otago Polytechnic's revised IP policy represents a momentous shift in educational practice, and the transition will take time. As a professional competency the learning curve for OER is not especially steep, and there will be assistance and guidance available on an on-going basis.
If you have not done it already, you should complete the 45-minute tutorial on Open Educational Resources at Otago Polytechnic.
Open Content Learning for Educators Workshop
The introductory tutorials you have just completed were designed as a prelude to the OCL4ed (Open Content Learning for Educators) online workshop.
Participation in the OCL4ed workshop is highly recommended for all teaching staff who are involved with developing and publishing OERs. The workshop covers all the main aspects of copyright and licensing as it relates to open education, as well as exploring the underlying philosophy and ethics of education.
