Draft concept for the motion

Draft motion

The following process guidelines will be implemented for inviting and selecting the participants for the train-the-trainers workshop scheduled for 20/21 November 2009:

  • The approved selection criteria will be used to determine the final selection of participants for the train-the-trainer's workshop.
  • OERNZ will canvass widely for prospective participants by extending invitations through the following channels:
  • Interested participants will be invited to provide a short summary by email response (one or two paragraphs) confirming that they meet the selection criteria
  • Compile an open list in the wiki of educators we would like to invite.
  • The OERNZ planning team will nominate three of its members to assist with a blind review of interested participants as follows:
    • Assuming that we receive less than 20 applications for the workshop, all candidates meeting the minimum criteria will be invited to attend.
    • In the event that more than 20 applications are received, candidates will be prioritised in accordance with the selection criteria including reasonable judgements to achieve the best spread among early childhood, primary and secondary levels.
  • Nominations must be received by the close of business 6 November 2009 and the final selection completed by the close of business on 9 November 2009 to facilitate booking of transport and accommodation. (Transport and accommodation will be funded in arrears.)

  • This sounds reasonable.... Jacqui Land 4th November 2009
  • I think this is good. We need to move quickly on this, as the workshops are not far away. Paul Seiler 09:01, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Agree - time is of the essence. 6th is 2 days away. Ready to move!--Rob McCrae 10:01, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Not sure we're going to get nominations by the 6th November. --Craig McDonald 00:42, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
  • My suggestion for a motion is that "The OERNZ planning team advertise through common e-channels for up to 20 NZ teachers to participate in the training-the-trainers workshop. (that's my start anyway) --Craig McDonald 00:42, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
  • You're right -- time is tight, but I have faith in the open model to scale ;-) -- WE can start by generating a list of people we would like to invite from existing WikiEducators who have completed their training and/or demonstrated a reasonable level of skills. I'm happy to help out on this one - --Wayne Mackintosh 00:55, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Sounds a good plan to me. Have been watching this meeting but not really participating as have sooooo much work on with seniors getting ready for examinations. They are nearly there. --Mary Robinson
Hi Mary --- glad you could join us, notwithstanding a hectic workload. Really appreciate your contributions -- its' a tight deadline and not the best time of the year to be organising a national initiative, but with a planning team like this, everything is possible :-). --Wayne Mackintosh 09:53, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Second

  • Hadleigh Benson (Wayne should confirm with Hadleigh on her second -- technically the motion has not been formerly tabled -- would be good to have a second "second" ;-) once the motion is tabled to be sure that we adhere to proper meeting protocol - --Wayne Mackintosh 01:12, 5 November 2009 (UTC))

Fine with me with the following coments: List of selected workshop participants should be listed openly by name in WE as well. Control mechanism by the planning committee when it comes to the selection process of potential trainers should be minimised as WE is an open community. It means that somebody with non-formal education should be given equal opportunity to shine and learn, if transferable skills can be applied. I think this is important as this is what sets us apart from others. Is this comment in the right place??--Patricia Schlicht 02:43, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Patricia --- Your comments are listed in the right place and thanks for your feedback -- Much appreciated. mmmm I don't see any control mechanisms in the selection process, particularly when the selection criteria are developed openly and transparently in the wiki. New Zealand, as a modern democracy has legislation to protect and respect the privacy of individuals (http://www.privacy.org.nz/the-privacy-act-and-codes) and we have a legal obligation to respect this in processes which may impact on individual rights. In addition, OERNZ is a formal education project. There are are minimum requirements around qualifications for holding a teaching position in New Zealand -- this is not intended to reduce the importance or contribution of non-formal education around the world and here in New Zealand. OERNZ is a project with clearly defined outcomes and deliverables, and this planning team is collaborating on the achievement of these objectives. --Wayne Mackintosh 03:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, Wayne. I am still learning about the NZ project, so pardon my ignorance about mechanism. I am working from familiar territories and with a good intent and I would like to commend the NZ project for their leadership in taking open education into the formal sector . Thanks.--Patricia Schlicht 03:55, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
