Coming into this class, many people know about computers and basics about the internet, however are often lacking in what exactly it means to have a digital presence and how to be a well abiding ditigal citizen. This article is the perfect introduction to both those concepts and opens the student up to the scope of the class. The internet is fragmented with constantly changing paradigms and this article gives the user a digital handguide on how to navigate it. This was the top selection in our group because of its concise yet informative layout. An accurate rating of this article would be a 5/5 (excellent use of graphics, there are external references, concise information, easy to follow, and popping color scheme) and that is precisely why this article would be a great opening article to students.

An integral part of this class, which is called Computers and Society, is computers! Students coming into this class are familiar with computers and are definitely using one while viewing the contents of this course. However, most students probably don't have a great idea of how a computer works and the inner details that are important for future discussions in this course. This article would be a great intro article because it not only talks about what computers are but also talks about the most important hardware components and software features. This article gives a structured tutorial type of information layout that lets the viewer easily follow the contents. Moreover, the article at the end provides meaningful computer and society questions which would be useful for students to start thinking of.

An important part of learning about anything is to learn about all aspects of a subject. Because this section is about privacy and digital freedom, most of the articles suggested in this section are ones that tell viewers how to protect their own computers and make themselves secure. While this is essential for everyone, the side of privacy that we often lose focus of is that large corporation are the root of the problem. People end up diagnosing the symptoms of the problem but don't regularly question the root of the problem, which is that large corporations are selling our private information. This article is perfect for this section because it not only talks about internet privacy but also mentions different views on it. This gives the students a wholesome overview of the subject at hand and could lead to meaningful discussions and understanding.

In every learning environment students should be presented with thought provoking and controversial viewpoints. This article, again by TechCrunch, talks about the status of privacy as we advance both our technologies and the internet. It mentions that as we progress the meaning of privacy will shift and will end up dissapearing. Learning about how to preserve privacy, this article is unique and allows students to consider the future and the possible implications of technology. This article would be a great asset to this section because it allows students to consider all aspects of the subject and provoke insightful analysis.

3. Intellectual Property

This video simply lays out the breaching of intelectuall property. When watching thos video "Embrace the remix": Kirby Ferguson I thought to myself that we see this everyday. We see it so often in music, tv show, technolgyy and so forth. We as a society don't pay much attention to detail enough so to see intellectual property being stolen and remixed into something very alike. For example the Video had a portion of Bob Dylan; a very know folk singer, stealing other folk singers rythems. Bob Dylan's music or at least 1/3 of his music used the rythmss of other famous folk artist. Today we see music sounding very much alike since it's all made by computers. In the World of technology we see Apple and Samsung steal eachotherss ideas on software and hardware features. Apple and Samsung breach intellectual property of eachotherr and consumers don't know that without one another they would not release the technolygy that they have released today. What I can relate to this topic is the fact that we as a society see replications of intelectuall property on a daily basis. I think that with all the taking and switching that people/companys do to patent products is what paves the way for innovation. I would rate this video a 5/5 since it was detailed and had evidence of the borrowing, stealing and transforming of intellectual property.

This article gives an insight of what exactly data managmentt and data security is. Imagine if a huge company was hacked and all of it's intellectual property was breached and hacked into, enough so to lose important information that put's them at great risk. Therefore they manage and protect important intellectual property of companies world wide. We as consumers need to understand that we come across hackers once in a while, whether it be our bank accounts, email, phone etc. This article really gave me an idea of how these important worldwide companies secure their intellectual property. I would this article a 5/5 for the information that it has and the detailed overview of the comapnies mission and beliefs.

The simplisicc layout this website provides the key features and bullet points stand out. When I reviewing this article I thought to myself all the movies I have watched that involve online phishing and what i dontt know about the reality of it. With simple keystrokes computer users infomationn can be at risk. What we dontt all know, just like drugs, who is sold from seller to seller, our identty is being sold the same way. Our credit card information that is captured from one hacker is sold to someone who potentially uses it for extorshon and so on. The computers that are high at risk are the ones who dontt have a secure computer firewall. Not all scams are commited online, somee take place in e-mailss. Infiltration to you computer provides full access to your personal information. Rating this website I would give it a 5/5. The visual layout was very well put. Simple yet highly discriptive this artcile does seem to be one to read.
This link provides a visual for every topic quickly talked about. I chose this article simply because it cuts to the chase and tells you how the ten most committed online crimes take place. I've recently posted tickets for sale on Craigslist and notice the amount of sexual solicitation. When I came across this article of sexual solicitation I wasn't suprised since I've seen these post before on sites such as Craigslist. This article really gives an insite of whats going on in the world of online crimes. I would rate this article 5/5 since it was detailed and brought ten common crimes that are committed onlinee.

5. Employment, Education and Entertainment

Games For Change is a nonprofit corporation with the goal to teach social impacts through digital games since 2004. Their website consists of a wide variety of educational games to choose from. This game in particular, Bioharmonious, has the player take care of two planets simultaneously. It contains one planet on the verge of death and another planet that is living prosperously but its life is fated with the dying planet. This game demonstrates the basics of the damage that manufacturing does onto a planet. It also has underlying messages showing that humans can either go down with the machines that have been created or find a way to fix and continue living. It allows players to think about their decisions and about the story behind the game. It is also free and has some beautiful art.
Not only does this game's link belong on this topic, but the website offers many other educational games and subjects that many people of all ages may learn from and enjoy.
The Chronicle of Higher Education has many sources of news and information. In ths article, a professor explains his opinion about education regarding online classes. While teaching, he found it hard to teach certain subjects online such as speech. Nowadays, people use technology to record themselves and post it onto whatever website they may be using. However, this does not change the fact that an online environment's experiences are different from a face-to-face, in-person class experience. He asks the question of: Should all classes be allowed teachable online?
This article does not exactly tell the story with a happy tone which is why it was chosen to be put on this topic. It was honest and thought provoking; especially so, since this generation has been trying to integrate studies with technological advances.

6. Midterm - Millennium Development Goals

The Millennium Development Goals are plans that have been agreed on by countries around the world. These people along with many other volunteers and innovators have been working to help fix and prevent extreme negative situations. The topics that are addressed for 2015 are: Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieve uiversal primary educatin, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, and develop a global partnership for development. The website explains the news and progress regarding such so far.
This website absolutely has to be here because it is the primary website for information concerning the MDG.
Economist online offers news and opinion about business and sciences. The article explains the small history about the problem of extreme poverty. Although taking quite some time, poverty has slowly been diminishing and it still is today. It used to be a very big dilemma, but now it is a problem that can be taken, broken apart, and solved. The article also explains the plans for poverty in the future which is hopefully bringing povery down to under 1%. It is true that times are tough, but they can only get better.
This website was voted here because it is connected to the first MDG which was to eradicate extreme hunger and poverty. It gives a very positive and informative outlook on a topic that people should be concerned with.

New York Times best-selling author Peter W. Singer gives a lecture on Cyber-security and Cyber-war. We often enjoy the internet and not think about the risks associated. We tend to not think about how unsecure the internet actually is. This video is a sober discussion of the current state of cyber security. Cyber security isn't just an America problem. The threat of cyber security stems across all countries. Governments around the world have created "cyber" armies to help combat the cyber wars that are currently happening. In some instances the battle has gone from the field to the internet. It is very daunting if you think about it, because it involves all who own computers. However, don't let it overwhelm you there are good guys out there working on solutions and fighting cyber-crime. I would give this video a 5/5 rating. It is very informative and worth the 1hr you will spending watching it. In our day in age we must consider the implications of our online activity and how we can easily be taken advantage of if we are not careful.

This article explores how three technological breakthroughs in artificial intelligence have finally happened. The first breakthrough is cheap parallel computation. The breakthrough occurred with Graphics Processing Units(GPU). A GPU is able to recalculate millions of Pixels many times a second. Because of this neural networks can have millions of connections between each other. The second breakthrough was Big Data. Big Data provided companies with the ability to store very large amounts of data in one or many different locations all around the world. We call these locations data centers. Typically, you can spot data centers out because they are very large structures with no windows. They have popped up all over Silicon Valley. The third breakthrough is the creations of better algorithms. With A.I. you need to be able to respond to input quickly and efficiently. Engineers have found ways to optimize their algorithms and to optimize advanced processing chips. With the combination of these three advancements we are able to compute data like we never have before. It will only get faster.

This article provides information on what is considered unethical uses of computers. We all have probably heard of various unethical uses either by our work or new articles. The article mentions five different types of unethical uses; Identity theft and fraud, digital piracy, financial theft and fraud, information theft, and disruption to computers or services. The one we are probably most familiar with is Digital Piracy. Digital Piracy involves downloading illegal music, movies, books, art work, and software. Many ISPs have begun to track users who are participating in illegal online activity. It might not seem like a big deal to us, but if we are honest with ourselves we know its wrong. Be aware of these things as you browse the web. This article a 5/5 for its brief and informative content. This article would fall under our risks of browsing the internet as well as our responsibly making sure we are being ethical.

This is a very interesting article. It presents us with the fact that there are millions of medial knowledge text documents that could read by computers to give us new insights into medical issues. These millions of documents have been essentially kept from doctors because they all have to be painstakingly evaluated by hand. With natural language processions researchers can scan of millions of documents and get information like never before. Some doctor could have found a cure for something that has been hidden for ages because it is buried in a mound of had written files. This is one of the ways computers can be used for good in our society. It sounds like something we should personally want to be involved with in if the chance came up. This article is a 5/5 for its information on how computers are changing the world for good.

This lecturer discuss about what Islamic religious says about women and It could not be overlooked the damage that has been done in the name of religion not just her own, but all of the world’s major faith. The misrepresentation and misuse and manipulation of religious scripture has influenced women’s social and cultural norms, their laws and daily lives to a point where they sometimes don’t recognized it.
This article says that MOOCs have great potential. It is amazing students' acceptance of MOOCs. There is about a year's experience with MOOCs, compared with hundreds of years of experience with traditional courses. MOOCs are here to stay. The problems of verifying students' identification, providing course materials, proctoring exams and exercises, and giving more personal attention to students in these massive classes are solving. We should wish for MOOCs to continue to improve because they offer great potential, not just for college students in the United States but for current and potential students around the world.

The role of technological progress is a catalyst for economic transformation. Energy, physical sciences, information and communication all have been boosted by the innovation of technology. The world cannot operate without technology today, since it has brought so many conveniences to human life. It is a common believe that technological progress has opened up a range of modern activities for people; Contrariwise, technology are socially shaped, as it have been the primary impetus for technological progress in society. However the detrimental effects of technology progress are also a notable aspect in human society. There is no doubt that the essential precondition for technology development must ensure a safe and sustainable world for today's society and for the later generation. This may include a cleaner environment, better healthcare, less crime and a more equal standard of living for all members of society.
