My Profile

Having taken early retirement at the end of 2011 for a lifestyle change I am now working as an educational consultant. I remain committed to open education and continue as an independent chair of the OER Foundation. I am also currently a member of the Todd Foundation Grants scheme on behalf of the ITP (Polytechnic) Sector

Previously Deputy CE at Otago Polytechnic, a role I held since 2003, prior to this I was Deputy CE (.5) and Dean, Health and Community Group since 2000. Other roles; Director of Research, Director CAPABLE NZ, Chair and Director Open Education Resource Foundation, Chair Tertiary Accord of New Zealand (TANZ) Academic Managers Group, Past Chair Institues of Technology and Polytechnics Research Forum -
Member Todd Foundation Grants committee.

Qualifications Ph.D - Flinders University of South Australia - Topic - Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Dip Soc Sci - Massey University New Zealand, B.Sc - Otago University, New Zealand

My teaching background has been in the areas of Behavioural Science, Research Methods, and Health informatics. I have a strong interest in the philosophy of education, this is informed by my work on assessment of prior learning and access to education. There have been significant links with open education, e-learning, flexible and blended learning as they relate to reducing barriers to access to education. This is also important at a policy level where traditional thinking on education can be a constraint. Being in a position to influence policy and challenging existing views is a key feature of how I see my current roles, both within Education and Otago Polytechnic.
