My Profile

Professional Background

I have been teaching ESL/EFL for over 20 years. In addition to teaching in the USA, I have taught in China, S. Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. I have provided teacher education seminars in the USA, Mexico, Cape Verde Islands, Panama, and Indonesia. I have taught in the Masters in TESOL program at American University in Washington, D.C. In this program I have taught both Methods and Theroy classes, linguists, language assessment and a class for DC teachers to better deal with ELL's in their mainstream classes.

Education

  • MA TESOL American University, Washington, DC
  • MPA Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Boston, Mass
  • BS Univeristy of Oregon. Eugene, Oregon

My Interests

Professional

Teacher education is my main interest. In this past year, I have moved toward a new area of training teachers and professors from various disciplines how to better reach their audience while teaching their content classes in English.

I have had the privilege of providing teacher training in China, Mexico, Panama, Cape Verde Islands, and in 2009 had the honor of being the key note speaker for the Association of Teachers of English of Senegal's English Day.

Personal

I have a passion for travel and enjoy traveling with my husband. We have traveled throughout the world and try to take at least one trip a year, but there is always so much more to see. On December 18th, we will be heading to Costa Rica! I am looking forward to the warmth and sunshine.

My Projects

Teacher Education Wiki for ESL/EFL Teachers. I would like to develop a site that has links by category with brief explanations for each, so that teachers can easily locate professional development resources, classroom resources, and technology integration information. This idea is in its infancy. I would appreciate all comments about how best to organize this type of project. Here is an example of what I am thinking about:

  1. Teacher Education links for the classroom
    • Example external link:ATES teacher's blog created and maintained by Rae Roberts [1]
    • Sample uploaded PDF: learning contract Sample Learning Contract
  2. Teacher Education links for professional development
  3. Teacher Education links for technology intergration

My Reflection

Creating a wiki is harder than I had thought it would be. I do love this learning experience and have lots of ideas how I will use it.

(Comment.gif: Hi Rae - I wonder if you know that the indexes at the top (the page contents) appear automatically? So you don't probably need a page index... let me know if you want some help, cheers Richardnz 04:18, 17 December 2009 (UTC))
