Suggesting an OLPC Tuvalu category

Jump to: navigation, search

Hi David,

I saw your post to the google group. Really exciting work. First of all, I am happy to help -- if you have something that I could help with (that is, long distance), please do ask me.

One of the areas of WikiEducator that I've been working on is categorisation (see our project pages at Workgroup:Categories.

I'm wondering if we should create a category to collect all of the OLPC Tuvalu pages into one place. In projects like this, we've been using the navigator template to transclude the category onto every page in which the template is included.

I'd like to name the category Category:OLPC Tuvalu, if that seems right to you.

The code to add to the template would be as follows. This is an "if then" statement that should sort the main OLPC Tuvalu page to the top of the category listing, and sorts all of the remaining pages according to their subpagenames, with the template itself sorted under the greek letter tau:

<includeonly>#ifeq: "SUBPAGENAME" | "OLPC Tuvalu" | |</includeonly>

<noinclude></noinclude>

Then we can categorise this new category to be a subcategory of other categories: Category:OLPC (which is definitely a good addition to our categories), as well as Category:Tuvalu. Also, to reduce redundancy, I'd want to remove any of the OLPC Tuvalu pages that are now directly categorised in Category:OLPC.

One of the action items for the categories workgroup is to figure out how to work with authors to implement categories. What do you think of this approach? Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Regards, Alison

Hi Alison, Yes that is a good idea, we do need categorisation. I agree with the system you suggest. I can also add the region (in this case Oceania) as a separate category.

Thanks for introducing eto this! David

Great. I'll add the codes and rework the categories. Good idea to add the regional category Oceania. We have a number of uncategorised categories that would fit well into regions.

I've been wondering what category we should use as a parent to Category:Countries, and a new Category:Regions, to collect the various regions. The children in these categories contain a mix of learning resources, projects, and users connected in some way to that place (unlike in Wikipedia where these kinds of categories contain only articles about that topic). Any thoughts on how this branch might layout are much appreciated.
