TWB Nigeria and WikiEducator CollabOERation projects

We work with various categories of teachers and this makes it almost impossible to see any idea that we do not have teachers who need them. --Raphael Oko, TWB Nigeria

Proposals for CollabOERation proof of concept projects

  • teacher training programs and curriculum on Human Rights Education and Peace Education. These are some of our core areas of need at the moment.
    • Human Rights Education
    • Peace Education
    • Learning Disabilities
  • One Laptop per Teacher - stand-alone teacher training about individual teaching skills to supplement the TWB Nigeria - Voices of Teachers programs. These could be promoted and introduced in the radio broadcast, with online resources for teachers if they wish to follow-up and learn more about the topic. We are currently launching the 'One Laptop per Teacher' campaign through the Cherrypal computers and this will make it easier for access to the internet by the teachers
  • Science without supermarkets - One of the active participants in WikiEducator works with new teachers developing science lessons for K-6. Some of these might be adapted for use in Nigeria. As they were originally developed, they require materials that are easily available in the US, but it would be interesting to modify them to fit a more global audience by using other products and natural and found items.

  • teacher training programs and curriculum on Human Rights Education and Peace Education. These are some of our core areas of need at the moment.

Questions

  • Will teachers be learning on their own? Or will the programs be facilitated?
  • Is this for general information? Should the focus be primarily on local issues?
  • Do you have sources of information that should be included?
  • Do you have general guidelines or suggestions for training development?

Learning Disabilities

There are a number of WikiEducators who specialize in working with and teaching about learning disabilities. As part of the ongoing CollabOERation project, this is a program that would be well suited to adopting as a proof-of-concept project.

One Laptop per Teacher

  • One Laptop per Teacher - stand-alone teacher training about individual teaching skills to supplement the TWB Nigeria - Voices of Teachers programs. We are currently launching the 'One Laptop per Teacher' campaign through the Cherrypal computers and this will make it easier for access to the internet by the teachers

Questions

  • Are there teaching skills that you want to learn?
  • What are some of the day-to-day problems that you face?
  • How do you like to learn? In a group discussion? Listening to an experienced colleague? Reading? Answering questions? Solving puzzles?
  • How much time can you spend learning something new?

Science without supermarkets

  • Science without supermarkets - One of the active participants in WikiEducator works with new teachers developing science lessons for K-6. Some of these might be adapted for use in Nigeria. As they were originally developed, they require materials that are easily available in the US, but it would be interesting to modify them to fit a more global audience by using other products and natural and found items.

Questions

  • Which lessons are appropriate for your students' grade-level?
  • What products used in these lessons are available to teachers and students in your neighborhood?
  • Are there lessons that you would like to use but need to be modified for your situation? How would you change the lesson for your students?
  • Do you have science lessons that you want to add to the CollabOERation? We can help you with things like formatting in WikiEducator.

Other projects for consideration

  • Streams Project (VT EPSCoR High School Outreach with a research component) -- Declan McCabe
This is the streams project link: http://www.uvm.edu/~streams/ and this is my piece: http://academics.smcvt.edu/Vermont_rivers/. We make tailored web sites for schools - they work in a stream near their school that we also sample to get an insect list. The web sites provide photos of the most common insects in each school's stream. It would be possible to adapt it to a Nigeria context - would require samples - ideally a Nigerian aquatic ecologist. With that level of on-the-ground support, we could add the web sites based on an insect list provided by a local scientist.
We also do water quality, but the costs rapidly multiply at that point.

(Comment.gif: --Valerie Taylor 13:42, 5 April 2010 (UTC) Water quality may also tie in with Millennium Development Goals)
