Thinking about Lecture-based -- versus student-based

If we're designing for K18 I don't think the concept of "lecture" is appropriate for K12

Perhaps "teaching" is a better concept.

Also, I'm not sure whether an OER can be "Lecture-based" the OER supports or enriches the lecture but it is not lecture-based if you know what I mean.

Shouldn't we say:

OERs to support teaching[edit]

OERs to support learning[edit]

Agreed. Changes made to this page. Question - should we change "Learner Perspective" and "Lecture Perspective" in the use OER to reflect those changes?

Now is later ... boldly editing to capture the distinction (as I see it) ... though I am still unsure of the value of this distinction - there is so much overlap. If this is to stay in the methodology section, could it become:

  • Educators collaborating to develop OER
    • for educators
    • for learners
  • Learners collaborating to
    • learn
    • develop their own learning resources (and share them)
  • Learners and educators collaborating to
    • learn
    • and in the process produce OER
      • for educators and
      • for learners.

Again this suggests learning design ... and, given that we have no chapter on learning design as it is too broad, this would probably go under "Compose".

Anyway, I have left it here for now (as it is ok here :-).

I've changed Learner/Lecturer perspective sections in "Use" chapter to "Educator perspective" and "Learner perspective." The current version is a little hard to follow as a whole (I think that's because you see as being more logical elsewhere). One thought is to discard the section entirely, but keep the "Educator perspective" and "Learner perspective." The rest of the page would stand as-is.

Wording does look a bit awkward now and the point is lost - something like:
... the distinction between educators and learners (consumers and producers) is potentially blurry - and roles reverse - the degree of control will vary according to the nature of the OER, the relationships and activities; choose or design a methodology that works for the situation.
The point is sort of made at the end of the previous section. Ktucker 04:05, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Recommend blending the text about Lecture-based, Student-based use into "Use OER" or "Learning Design" (suggested rename for "Use").

That text is only meant to introduce the distinction between Lecture-based and Student-based. There are two sections in Use OER that cover both in a little more detail. If you intend to make a Student-based OER, then it may affect the development model you choose.

However, I understand if it is "cart before the horse" and will delete if you feel they are out of place.

References still valid?

Is the reference to (Gonzalez-Barahona, 2007) still valid? - I replaced the associated text with something about GNU/Linux distributions.

I also changed text close to (Acohido, 2002) - so this reference might also nolonger apply ?

I think the Gonzalez-Barahona should be used in conjunction with a newer source. I will look for one tomorrow.

The Acohido reference still applies. Thanks for adding DistroWatch.

When mentioning "Windows" - do we need to place TM somewhere and state that is a trademark of Microsoft?

I think so. Windows isn't mentioned a lot in the handbook, but it does appear later in the Create OER section. I'll add a footnote or something to denote trademark status and TM everywhere else.
