Learning4Content/Workshops/eL4C51/Thoughts on quality
Dr Hemant Damle About quality of resource. quality is relative term. It changes from target audience geographic location with time frame and the benchmarks used.Like in other fields like financial accreditation there can be levels of quality. + - Quality education is very demanding both to learner as well as provider. ( that's why its a big business )Open approach is best for low resources set up and people with time constraints. ( Most are net best and can be used whenever person is free and willing) From my own example I have learned many things from open . +
Patricia Schlicht
- QC in open can be roping in experts willing to share time and expertise for free or at least some recognition or rewards not necessarily financial. +

Today I am asked to give my views on three questions. viz:
- Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?
- In your opinion, should closed or open authoring approaches be used in the development of learning resources for use in education? Give reasons for your view?
- What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments?

Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach?
If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?
- Yes QUALITY is the MAJOR Issue.
a) In an Ocean it is said " WATER WATER EVERYWHERE BUT NOT A DROP TO DRINK". Same analogy applied to expansion of Education Sector in almost all nations. But Quality is indeed main concept.
- Every teacher has his own unique style of addressing a subject and the same would be reflected in the e-learning material also. There is a need of a moderator so that may be the same concept / topic is explained by different teachers in a brief manner so that the online learner gets the benefit of Body of Organized Knowledge.
- I strongly feel that quality would evolve over time in an open autoring approach. However efforts of contributors need to be encouraged the way it is being done and fine tuning required from time to time.
Wiki Concept of collabrative content development is a great way and approach
(: I agree to what you have posted. Certainly, quality content is the major issue. Some standards are to be maintained before the development of content. Yes,contributors need to be motivated.--Rashkath 04:20, 22 September 2011 (UTC))
In your opinion, should closed or open authoring approaches be used in the development of learning resources for use in education? Give reasons for your view?
The closed authoring approach is subjected to internal brainstorming but the open approach involves the public domain and the fast track approach od the closed system v/s slower development durations need to be narrowed down . This can be done probably by giving deadlines for some core contents in various topics and subsequent builtup can continue.
What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments?
1. Identification of Content Providers in conferences and giving them assignments to contribute quality content.
2. Motivate the content developers to provide quality content and give some tips on making good validated content

Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?
No, I think it allows for flexible way of learning where you can work at your own pace. It also allows for people to share their views on issues.
In your opinion, should closed or open authoring approaches be used in the development of learning resources for use in education? Give reasons for your view?
I will go for both depending on the situation.
In my part of the wold where getting internet assess can be very difficult to people in the rural areas then they will have to depend on the closed type. Where people can have assess just like I do then it will be the best to use the open. This will help my students log in for their assignments and reading materials.
What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments?
1. I think there should be a way where people will not just log in and distort what has been done by others. 2. Only qualified content providers should be employed to do the work. Bekoe --Bekoe 20:28, 20 September 2011 (UTC) 9:27Pm 20 Sept. 2011 3. We should encourage others who are not aware of wiki educator and all that we know about the open approach to leaning to get on board and bring their ideas in as we are also doing. --Bekoe 08:12, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with what you say access is still a problem in our country also. However with good content on wikieducator the teacher can have the content stored and may be have printouts for sharing can be another approach.
- Hi Regina. I also experiment the problem of internet access with my students here in Latin America. Besides there's still an issue of reluctance from teachers and students to online trainning. Regarding the quality content concerns, sometimes, to have a board of consultants or specialists on the topic is neccesary. They can revise the materials from time to time and advice some changes if something is wrong.Warm wishes. --Alejacha 16:23, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- I also share your views. Aside the print out, you can work offline by using CDs.Warm welcome.--Godfredabledu 17:36, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Probably content can be collected from wiki and stored on some medium and taken to remote locations. </br>I suggest that some topic centered CD's may be created at wikieducator for distribution to places without access. I would like your feedback on what I have said. --Ravi limaye 19:56, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you all so much for sharing your ideas on my issue I appreciate them. I never thought of these wonderful feed-backs. Its always good to share ideas.--Bekoe 20:05, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- The feature of pdf printout is an interesting stuff as it enables creation of print media from the content generated online --Ravi limaye 00:23, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

- Personally, I advovate for quality as against quantity. I also share the views of others that quality should be the watch word when it comes to the development of educational resources, especially using an open authoring approach.--Godfredabledu 16:31, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?
- Yes quality is a major concern.I want to share one of my experience, during my exams while reading 2-3 books for understanding the concepts better i rather landed up in confusion because the facts were contradictory. To avoid this kind of situation while develpoing e-materials there should be some kind of check.
In your opinion, should closed or open authoring approaches be used in the development of learning resources for use in education? Give reasons for your view?
- In my opinion open authoring approach should be used becuse if people from different communities come togher to develop a resource material then it will have a mix of ideas, opinions and different teaching styles and will help to create a more effective resource material and learners will find it even more interesting.
What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments?
- I think when we are developing any resource material through open authoring all the information that has been gathered from different Educators should be sent to a team of experts with complete knowledge of the subject for their final approval. With this mechanism a more precise and effective resource material can be made.

My concerns are not with the quality of educational resources available, but with access and cost. I am excited to be beginning exploration of resources with an open authoring approach. I am so conscious of time pressure on teachers and I believe that if we collaborated and shared resources we could save time, and enjoy opportunities for deeper learning experiences. I hope that open authoring will enable the sharing of the wealth of expertise of educators. Collaboration and sharing of expertise, ideas and wisdom must add to the value and usefulness of teaching resources. Surely open resources created by educators for educators are the richest resource of all. I would like to see opportunities for our learners to share in the creation of rich learning experiences and resources. To assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments it could be useful to include examples of use, evidence of reflection, and links to projects or collaboration. I think quality of resources will be a self fulfilling prophesy, with quality resources attracting a following, and those not up to par being improved upon or 'disappering'. --Annekenn 07:58, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with you Anne, I am new to this field, but I do have a concern about cost and access. I also believe that collaboration is the key, which seems to be reflected in multiple posts on this quality issue. -- Tracey McLauchlin 08:40, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

I would like to address the three questions point-wise:
- Concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach:
Authenticity of the material is always a concern in any web-based content. In addition, open authoring of any learning resource should be moderated to check its quality and appropriateness with regard to the target group's expectations from that course.
* Should closed or open authoring approaches be used in the development of learning resources for use in education?
Open authoring is always a good idea for pooling the best resources. Even the learners may be encouraged to contribute to the material, as they are expected to read the recent advances in their field of study. However, inclusion of the contributions into the learning resources should be done only after strict moderation.
* What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments?
A course team approach to moderate the resources would assure a better quality material.
- (: I too feel a team approach on two fronts : CONTENT and CONTENT PRESENTATION , the pedogogy strategies are vital--Ravi limaye 13:58, 25 September 2011 (UTC))

My thoughts...
-I'm in the process of understanding the open educational resources system, the advantages (I see there are many advantages) and disadvantages. I'm thinking how to created "efficient" materials and how "open" they must be. I work for an academic project with vulnerable groups as minority native communities and I should be very careful and with issues like culture values, privacy and security of contents. Continue......

Hi everyone! Today, I read a lot about WE and developing free content. The idea seems to be good. It is the need of the hour. People all across the globe are working individually. We must collaborate and join our hands for a good cause. My concerns are
- Quality in terms of authenticity of resource
- Who will take the responsibility?
- Training of teachers on content creation in a wiki atmosphere
Thinking about solution... --Rashkath 14:44, 24 September 2011 (UTC)
(: I agree with Rashmi, I visited her maths classes posted and collection on maths . I also feel that COLLABARATION, COMMUNICATION is the key. As educators responsibilty lies on the teachers and content providers to validate and revalidate the content and experience also probably helps . Training in content creation and formation of content teams and wiki methodology is good --Ravi limaye 13:52, 25 September 2011 (UTC))

- Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?
Yes ,I do believe that open authority is a great way to improve teaching & learning .Using this approach develop dialog, debate and collaboration skills within people from different backgrounds and culture . Using the open approach depends mainly on two factors "quantity & quality ",more participants means different views, ideas moreover participants should be selective and expertise people.
- In your opinion, should closed or open authoring approaches be used in the development of learning resources for use in education? Give reasons for your view?
I prefer OER approach ,and I believe it's a reality in 21st century, keeping in mind that people use social media and like to be in touch with the whole world .Thus collaborative learning resources give them opportunity to gain knowledge and also facilitate them to reflect what they have learned.
- What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments?

I am a beginner in the field of OER though i read lot about Open Access Initiative and Open Access Information. Its really good to see people are ready to share their valuable products with us. The concept itself is a blessing for the people living in a country like India.Quality can be ensured by proper reviews and evaluations.

I am a beginner and have just started reading much about OER and open authority .It is really a blessing to have things which are extremely valuable for educators in such a setting .I hope we can bring wonders to the instructional platform as it is a collaborative approach.Yes Quality assessment must be done for ensuring a better reliability of these resources.

Do you have any concerns about the quality of educational resources developed using an open authoring approach? If so, what are your concerns? If not, how does an open authoring approach contribute to high quality learning materials?
- Freedom to edit is the most fascinating point of open authoring approach, But what concerns me is can we control the freedom to be in a proper scope? I do believe everyone wants the educational resources to be better and better, but however, we have our own's limit of knowledge.
In your opinion, should closed or open authoring approaches be used in the development of learning resources for use in education? Give reasons for your view?
- Yeah, open authoring approaches give us the freedom to express everyone's own idea, I think free to express is the motive power of self-improve and the progress of knowledge.
What mechanisms can be adopted to assure quality of educational content developed in wiki environments?
- Well, I can't think out one.

- Concerns regarding Oer.
I feel that quality of the resource material needs to be taken care of.Each & every one must be very particular about the matter edited .
Closed or open authoring approaches?
- Open authoring approach is always better as every person can avail of the required knowledge resources.
Quality of Educational content.
- Every educator should take care to add the right matter in his work. I order to do so he must be up to date in his subject & take the trouble to be in touch with the latest information.
A Supervisory Board can be instituted.Veena Dhume.
