Massey University

Massey University is New Zealand's biggest university. Over 18,000 students are enrolled in our three campuses in Auckland, Manawatu and Wellington, plus another 18,000 through distance learning. In addition, Massey has a small campus in Singapore. Our history goes back to 1927, when Massey was a college specialising in agriculture, horticulture and animal science. Massey now offers the broadest range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in New Zealand and is known as the country's pre-eminent provider of university-level distance education. In 2010, the University celebrated its 50th year of offering distance education to students throughout New Zealand and beyond.

Massey University has an international reputation for its research innovation, practices and results. Massey is the only university represented in all of the New Zealand government-funded Centres of Research Excellence. Our achievements as one of the world's premier learning establishments have been recognised in our listing as one of the top three New Zealand universities in the prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranking of the world's top 500 universities. Massey consistently appears in the top 200 to 300 category within the Times Higher Education rankings. Each year, in excess of 4000 international students from more than 100 countries study at Massey. Currently the University has over 1000 doctoral candidates and Massey produces the highest number of completed postgraduate research degrees in New Zealand.

Massey's College of Education has the highest number of postgraduate students of any other education Faculty. Our College of Business is AACSB accredited and Massey is rated top in New Zealand within the areas of Finance and Creative Arts. In Wellington, the University co-hosts the New Zealand School of Music. Massey also has New Zealand's only veterinary school and teaching hospital and offers a fully online Masters in Veterinary Medicine (MVM) by distance to students living overseas. The University also delivers by distance online postgraduate programs throughout Asia on contract to the World Bank.

The University is well know for its leadership in blended and distance education and is fully committed to creating a vibrant digital learning culture for all students. Massey recently adopted Moodle as its new learning management system and was the leader developer of the Mahara eportfolio system used extensively in the open source education community. Notably, Massey is the tenth largest user of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in New Zealand.

Massey is an exciting and progressive university where students can study anywhere in the world. With a tradition of academic excellence, Massey University is the nearest thing New Zealand has to a national university. This point is evidenced by the fact that Massey hosts the National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence. Massey's goal is to be acknowledged as New Zealand's defining university and a world centre of tertiary learning.
