  1. Find the verbs in the following sentences:
    (a) Jackie plays badminton every Tuesday.
    (b) Karla walked her dog yesterday morning.
    (c) My mother and father live in Vancouver.
    (d) Cindy prefers chocolate ice cream.
    (e) My dog is a dalmation.

  2. Find the helping verbs in the following sentences:
    (a) Louise is coming to the graduation ceremony.
    (b) Andrew would like to study forestry.
    (c) The boys should be helping with the chores.
    (d) Mike doesn't like hamsters.
    (e) Will you be working on the machinery tomorrow?

  3. For each sentence, find the subject and the object.
    (a) The dog ate a bone.
    (b) Three girls were playing volleyball.
    (c) Her aunt and uncle bought a new car.
    (d) "Here's your coffee", said the waitress.
    (e) The rocks fell on the president and his wife.
  4. Find the phrase (or phrases) in each sentence.
    (a) She took three candies from the dish.
    (b) He walked to the bank.
    (c) Besides the parrot, Karen had three other pets.
    (d) The books in this box are not new.
    (e) All of the students are registered for the math course.

  5. Find the complete verb and the subject in each sentence. (Remember that you won't find the subject inside a phrase.):
    (a) Maggie swam in the lake.
    (b) Sharon and Maggie swam in the lake.
    (c) Sharon might have been swimming yesterday.
    (d) Besides swimming, they also enjoy scuba diving.
    (e) Does he remember his birth mother?
    (f) "Please don't forget me", begged the old woman.
    (g) Both of my jackets are in the wash.
    (h) Here are your new boots.
    (i) There will be some rain showers tomorrow.
    (j) Inside the envelope was a cheque for a thousand dollars.

  6. Choose the correct verb for each of the following:
    (a) A cat (does) (do) not like to get its feet wet.
    (b) The prices in that store (is) (are) too expensive.
    (c) Four deer (was) (were) crossing the road in the dark.
    (d) Wendy's relatives (is) (are) coming to visit next week.
    (e) My sister and her children (is) (are) sick with the flu.
    (f) Either the boss or his supervisors (was) (were) aware of this mistake.
    (g) The best of the contestants (is) (are) chosen to compete in the finals.
    (h) Neither the cows nor the horse (was) (were) able to hear the cougar.

  7. Choose the correct form of the verb for each sentence:
    (a) [feel] Last week, I _______ too sick to go to work.

  8. Each of the following sentences includes a spelling mistake. Find the wrong word, and then write the right word beside it.
    (a) When the rain stops, lets go for a walk.
    (b) Don't forget to turn the light of when you leave the room.
    (c) It doesn't matter what i want.
    (d) She sayed that she would remember my birthday.
    (e) I want you to know that your my best friend.
    (f) Tina had alot of mistakes in her homework.
    (g) She got more work then she wanted.
    (h) I dont like to drive on snowy roads.
    (i) The bridges are very dangerous when there icy.
    (j) The flower pot is to heavy for me to carry.
  9. Re-write these sentences, making sure that:
    • each sentence begins with a capital letter
    • each sentence ends with the correct end punctuation (.  ! or ?)
    • each sentence has commas to separate items in a list
    (a) the forest is full of mosquitoes ticks and blackflies
    (b) do you like to go hiking in the woods
    (c) watch out for grizzly bears and cougars
    (d) i washed the car cleaned out the garage swept the walkway and mowed the lawn
    (e) have you forgotten to pay me for all of that work
  10. Two of these sentences are complete. The other 4 are fragments. Re-write the fragments to make them complete.
    (a) Besides her best friend.
    (b) Although I really wanted to go.
    (c) Sara was eating cherries.
    (d) Not really paying attention to the traffic lights.
    (e) In fact, I had forgotten.
    (f) The red tulips, the yellow daffodils, and all the other flowers of spring.
  11. Read the following short paragraph:

    I put on my walking shoes and find my jacket. Then I call my walking buddy and ask her to meet me at the corner. I set the answering machine and leave my troubles behind me as I close the door. I race down the stairs and out into the sunshine. It feels good to be alive!
    (a) Re-write this paragraph, changing all verbs to the past tense.

  12. Add modifiers (adjectives and adverbs) to make these sentences more interesting:
    (a) A bird is singing in the bush.
    (b) There is a cloud over the mountain.
    (c) The child is walking to school.
    (d) After the marathon, Julie drank a glass of water.

    Read the following paragraph, and then choose the best answer in each of the following questions:

    (1)Does your wrists ache and your fingers hurt after typing at the keyboard all afternoon? (2)Poor posture has leaded to all sorts of minor injuries. (3)If your keyboard is at the wrong height, for example. (4)You can develop carpel tunnel syndrome -- a painful irritation of the nerves in the wrist. (5)Its important to make sure that your keyboard is at a comfortable working height. (6)Adjust your keyboard surface up or down so that your wrists are straight when your fingers are placed on the middle row of keys. (7)The easiest way to do this is to rise or lower the little legs on the underside of the keyboard.
