Discussion Page
Goals:
- To give away open source computers to others who would like them with priority to:
- Blueskin Bay schools and their pupils
- To other Enviro schools in our region
- To other schools in our region
- To share information about:
- Open source computing
- Using Ubuntu and Edubuntu
- To have pupils teaching others how to:
- Set up a computer
- Use the applications
Rationale
- Open source computers have the capacity to make communities more resilient
- Have the potential to save NZ money from not having to pay for licences
- It is important to test their potential in other schools
- Establish a sustainable system for their continued use
Why:
Open source software
- Will be used because:
- The licensing of the software allows it to be given away on a computer
- It is reliable and easy to set up and run
- It security means there are no issues with viruses etc
- Because the philosophy behind open source is about doing something for our fellow human beings
“It's Free Software and it gives you freedom!”
Software Freedom
- The freedom to run the program, for any purpose
- The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (access to the source code is a precondition for this)
- The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbour
- The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits. Access to the source code is a precondition for this
- Free software saves money, is easy to use and can keep older computers running longer
Give away computers
- Because:
- We have access to decommissioned computers
- To empower others with the knowledge of open source computers
- To give decommissioned computers a new lease of life
- To lessen the environmental degradation in NZ
- To stop developing nations becoming the dumping grounds for NZ cast off computers
Establishment of a Trust or Committee??
