Response to Learner

Hi,

Thanks for sending your User Name and Password. I have set up your User Page - http://www.wikieducator.org/User:Rouvdi

For the duration of this course, please leave things as they are, so I can easily help you if there's a problem. After the course is over, you can go into "My Preferences", and change your password.

Now, you will have to CONFIRM Your WikiEducator Account - this is a Very Important Step.

Confirm Your Account on WikiEducator

  1. You will receive an Email from "Erik Moeller" <moeller@scireview.de>
  2. Read the message- from ERIK MOELLER, "moeller@scireview.de" Subject: WikiEducator e-mail address confirmation - "Someone, probably you, from IP address....has registered an account "XXXX" with this e-mail address on WikiEducator. To confirm that this account really does belong to you and activate e-mail features on WikiEducator, open the hyperlink (underlined) in your browser"
  3. If the Email is not in your Inbox, please check your Spam or Trash folder, because sometimes email messages are found there.
  4. Please Inform me by email when you have Confirmed your Account
  5. I will go back into your WikiEd Account to make an important modification to your settings - something I could not do, until you have Confirmed Your Email Address.

Modified WikiEducator Account Settings

I have set up your your WikiEducator Account settings. The most important of these, is to ensure that you will be automatically notified by WikiAdmin, of changes to your pages. For example, when I make an edit to your page, you will be automatically notified by WikiAdmin. This will give you a better understanding of what we mean by "collaboration" and why it is so powerful in WikiEducator!

The WikiAdmin notification also works when you visit someone else's page and make an edit. So, for example, I visited your page as User:Wikirandy - when you make changes to the content on your User Page, I will be notified! So, please do....and I will come visit your page, after you! We can collaborate together!

Initial Content on Your User Page

I have added some content on your User Page - you are free to keep it, change it, or modify it. Everything is possible in WikiEducator.

- Randy

Revised Process to Accelerate Collaboration

  • Learner confirms his/her email address
  • Facilitator then adds content
  • Learner is automatically notified of the changes, and can modify content accordingly
  • The Cycle of Collaboration Begins! quickly

First Steps

  1. Learner sends, via email, his/her Preferred User Name & Password (temporary - can be changed after course is completed)
  2. Facilitator responds to Learner with Email Info - about what will happen next, and that Learner Must WAIT to Receive a CONFIRMATION Email....
  1. Facilitator captures Learner's email address, from the sent email
  2. Facilitator records Learner's email address, Preferred User Name & Password
  3. Facilitator creates/registers a WikiEducator account, using Learner's supplied User Name & Password
  4. Facilitator logs in as Learner - using his/her User Name & Password
  5. Facilitator clicks on "My Preferences" - (top right corner - in between 'my talk' and my watchlist')
  6. Facilitator goes to the bottom of the "My Preferences" screen, and clicks "Send CONFIRMATION Code
  7. Facilitator waits for Learner to receive Confirmation Code from ERIK MOELLER (Erik is a WikiAdministrator)
    1. Email reads: moeller@scireview.de....WikiEducator e-mail address confirmation
    2. This email is easy to miss - if you don't see it, also check your email Trash or Spam folders
  8. Learner logs into his/her Email Account, to view email received from ERIK MOELLER
  9. Learner opens the Email Message received from ERIK MOELLER, clicks on the hyperlink to confirm his/her email address
  10. Learner notifies Facilitator via email, that s/he has confirmed his/her email address

Next Steps

  1. Facilitator logs into Learner's newly-registered WikiEducator Account, using supplied User Name & Password
  2. Facilitator modifies email settings on first page (checks all, at bottom of page), and changes settings in several other areas
    1. These changes enable a better collaboration experience in WikiEd
  3. Facilitator logs out.
  4. Facilitator logs in, this time as Facilitator's User Name
    • Facilitator visits Learner's User Page
    • inserts note (i.e., Welcome New User! - try it out....just click "edit" and start editing! Be sure to put in a brief summary and click save)
    • inserts Infobox
    • inserts L4C course navigation template "L4C_Advance_Community_Media_nav"
  1. Learner is automatically notified of changes to his/her User Page by WikiAdmin (remember - that is why we wanted to Confirm Your Email Address)
    1. Learner's email reads: "WikiEducator page: User:XXXX has been changed by XXXX
    2. Email notice reads: The WikiEducator page User:XXXX has been changed on 15:11, 15 December 2008 by XXXX, see http://www.wikieducator.org/User:XXXX for the current version.
    3. Learner clicks on the hyperlink embedded in email (i.e., See http://www.wikieducator.org/index.php?title=User:XXXX for all changes since your last visit)
    4. Alternately, Learner visit http://www.wikieducator.org/User:XXXX page, and then clicks the "History" tab. (S/he can then compare the current with the previous version - changes shown in red)
  2. Learner then 'sees' all changes since his/her last visit.
  3. Learner decides to 'edit' his/her User Page
  4. Facilitator is notified that changes have been made to a page that s/he is watching
  5. Facilitator responds by visiting hyperlinked page, makes an edit, and The Cycle of Collaboration Begins!

Using Discussion / Talk Pages

  • Using Discussion / Talk pages is an excellent way in sharing your ideas with your peers about content in the wiki.
  • Every page has a "Discussion" Tab - (it's at the top of each page, towards the middle)
  • Click on the "Discussion" Tab, insert a subject, and then start writing your note. Be sure to include a Summary and then Save.
  • The person who created the page, should receive a notice from WikiAdmin, that the page has been changed.
  • For the course, please use the "Feedback"
