2022.5.12 Mike and Valerie Taylor have just purchased an airplane - BD4 N2318P. Alan Colburn bought the partially completed kit and finished the plane over six years. Its Certificate was issued in July 2015. With changes in jobs and family locations, Alan was only able to fly it occasionally so he found it a new home here at Spruce Creek. Alan flew the plane from Richland WA to Tucson AZ (7 hours flying) and after several weeks of waiting for a weather window, flew another 9 hours to Brooksville FL to visit family before continuing on to Spruce Creek (45 minute flight). The plane finally arrived here with about 82 hours on the airframe.

The designer of this easy to build kit plane is Jim Bede - yes, that guy, the one who designed all those other planes - several Grummans, and the BD5 personal jet. This 150+ kt plane is powered by a Lycoming O-360 so Mike and Valerie are looking forward to some flight-seeing and vacation trips in the near future. Mike is getting back into formation flying with the Gaggle group.

. Bede wrote a 165-page BD-4 builder's book, "Build Your Own Airplane", that gives the amateur builder a good perspective on construction techniques. The intention was to have people with little or no fabrication experience start with a set of comprehensive plans and work up to a "bolt together" operation, using complex compone​​nts provided from the factory. In order to simplify construction, there were few curved surfaces and most of the fuselage was made up of flat aluminum sheeting. The only major components with compound curves were the engine cowling and landing gear spats which were made of fibreglass. The fuselage is constructed of aluminum angle braces bolted together to form a truss frame. An innovative wing structure employed a "panel-rib" constructed in sections consisting of a rib whose upper edge was "extended" horizontally to become one section of the wing surface. The wing was progressively built up by sliding these sections together over the tubular spar and fastening them together where they met. Although the original wing design was easy to build, current BD-4B features a redesigned, more conventional, metal wing with a tubular spar bonded to honeycomb ribs.
