Creating Schoolwide PBL Aligned to Common Core * Green Street Academy is a two-year-old public middle and high school in urban Baltimore, Maryland. One of the school's focuses is to embrace the green eco-sustainability movement and the new career paths it will generate. Like most schools, GSA is designed around extremely high academic standards that capture students' imaginations, stimulate their curiosities and inspire their successes. Unique to our program, though, is that last year we began the process of transforming the entire school to a true project-based learning (PBL) environment by the end of this school year. Here, are some of the transformation experiences -- both positive and negative -- we've had since beginning the shift.
Try testing out the driving question you have created on a student and see how they react. Will every student jump up and down about it? No, but we can at least have students say, "I guess that sounds cool." driving questions

let’s help kids do more than just notice cool things that happen in the world. Help foster the curiosity and ability to find out WHY that cool thing happens and what it could mean applied elsewhere. PBL

Rapid Teacher Training components * components that make up an effective training program for new teachers and tutors. Each area includes a description of the component followed by examples of where existing programs implement it. The examples are drawn from Teach For America (TFA), the MATCH School in Boston, the City Year volunteer corps in Boston, and the Resident Resource (R2) training program at Olin College of Engineering. * Teach for America (TFA) set big goals, invest in students and their families, plan purposefully, execute effectively, continuously increase effectiveness, and work relentlessly. Because they believe in their process and believe their teachers will be successful, they build camaraderie around this shared culture.
Personalized learning “places the interests and abilities of learners at the center of their education experience. In personalized learning, educators develop environments in which students and teachers together build plans for learners to achieve both interest-based and standards-based goals” (Halverson et al, 2015). * Literacy, Personalized * elements of personalized learning as outlined by Allison Zmuda, co-author of Learning Personalized: The Evolution of a Contemporary Classroom (Jossey-Bass, 2015): Time & Space; Assignments; Curriculum; Reporting; Feedback; Roles.
Collaborative Learning * For all collaborative teamwork tasks, it’s important that the assignment’s demands are designed to students’ skill levels with task management, conflict resolution, and communication taken into consideration. While the educator should of course monitor and assess the collaborative work of each team, peer feedback should be taken into account. Using peer evaluation through defined levels or scales of collaboration to provide constructive feedback can lead to student improvement. Through constructive and well-defined collaborative learning tasks, teachers not only help students refine already learned skills, but teach them the value of accepting the contributions of others. * "Kathy Murphy, a seventh-grade math teacher in Worchester, MA, often has both students and parents question her about the value of her group work assignments. It’s only after presenting them with the challenge of explaining what they already know to a peer that they see the value of collaboration. “Even the kid who thinks they are the top student can learn something from the other students,” Few problems in the real world are solved by a single individual, and teaching through collaboration in the classroom presents a number of benefits that will stay with students long after they graduate."

- PBL * requires an action plan. What is going to be learned, created, shared? When is it going to be completed by? Who is going to be responsible? What barriers and obstacles might be in the way? What resources are needed? * Conferences are one of the most underutilized approaches to managing a PBL experience.
