CIS2 Community Service Learning : SPRING 2009

I am really pleased that we will be partnering with The Tech Museum and the Global Fellows program at Santa Clara University.

  • The Tech Museum of Innovation http://www.thetech.org
There are a number of community service learning opportunities working directly with The Tech staff. Some projects are based in Second Life, the virtual 3D version of the The Tech Museum in San Jose. Most projects are online web research associated with new projects and exhibits being planned and developed for The Tech. You will provide information and commentary about the research topic that you are assigned. ...more about Second Life

  • Santa Clara University Global Fellows program http://thetechvirtual.org/global-fellows
There are also projects working with Santa Clara students who will be working with non-profit humanitarian organizations all over the world. You will be working with them to help them prepare for their summer assignments. This will require web research and some writing online. Have you been to countries these students will visit? Are you familiar with the language, customs or the locations? Any information that your can share will be greatly appreciated. [1] [2] [3] The Global Fellows will be working toward one or more of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals in their partner projects. - End Poverty and Hunger, Universal Education, Gender Equality, Child Health, Maternal Health, Combat HIV/AIDS, Environmental Sustainability, Global Partnership

To ensure that everyone finds a community service project that works for them, other options are available

  • Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org
Distributed Proofreaders provides a web-based method to ease the conversion of Public Domain books into e-books. By dividing the workload into individual pages, many volunteers can work on a book at the same time, which significantly speeds up the creation process.

  • If you volunteer in your community - school, church, non-profit organization, now and wish to continue that as your community service learning project, you are welcome to do that. You will need to provide information about the organization, a contact and a project that has some connection to the CIS2 course.

Read through all the information about the projects. Find one that you like and learn more about the specific activities for that project.

I'm sure there are going to be lots of questions, because these partnerships are new to all of us, as well as to you!

The community service learning projects provide a great opportunity to work in the community and learn new skills. By bringing this experience back to the course, we learn much more about how we can apply what we are learning in the classroom and in the community.

For SPRING 2009, the community partners we will be working with are

  • The Tech Museum - physical and virtual
  • Santa Clara University Global Fellowship program

Project Gutenberg

http://www.gutenberg.org

There are over 25,000 free books in the Project Gutenberg Online Book Catalog. The Project Gutenberg collection was produced by tens of thousands of volunteers. You can help. Distributed Proofreaders provides a web-based method to ease the conversion of Public Domain books into e-books. By dividing the workload into individual pages, many volunteers can work on a book at the same time, which significantly speeds up the creation process.

During proofreading, volunteers are presented with a scanned page image and the corresponding OCR text on a single web page. This allows the text to be easily compared to the image, proofread, and sent back to the site. A second volunteer is then presented with the first volunteer's work and the same page image, verifies and corrects the work as necessary, and submits it back to the site. The book then similarly progresses through two formatting rounds using the same web interface.

Once all the pages have completed these steps, a post-processor carefully assembles them into an e-book, optionally makes it available to interested parties for 'smooth reading', and submits it to the Project Gutenberg archive.

  • Register with the site as a volunteer.
  • Read the introductory email you receive and the Beginning Proofreader's FAQ.
  • Confirm your registration, sign in, choose a project, and try proofreading a page or two!
  • Track your own volunteer hours. There is no automated time or work tracking available.

Networking Website for Global Fellows: Global Fellows Network

Morgan, Kelsey

The goal of this project is to connect past, present, and future global fellows by providing an online space for individuals to ask questions, raise concerns, and share their inspiring stories with one another. *There would be a link from the Tech Museum;s homepage to the main page of the Global Fellows Network. Main Page: -Interactive map of the world. (with links on the countries to the global fellows who worked with organizations in the specific country.) -There would be also be a search bar where users could search for specific fellows or programs. -Also, there would be a space for discussion groups. -ie. Safety While Traveling; discussion group, Food to eat in India;ン discussion group Specific Country Pages -After clicking on the link on the main page’s interactive map, users would be connected to a page consisting of all fellows that worked in that country. -The user can select from that list, specific individuals and access their personal page. Personal Fellow Page -Each person will be able to upload a profile picture and distinct quotation about their experience as the header of their page. -Within the page there will be tabs for photos, their personal stories about their global fellowship experience, and a way to contact them.

Tanzania

Patrick, Brady

Brady and I plan to collect reports from the UN Millennium Development on Tanzania in order to gain and share this information with others. Assistance we could use: How to set up a wiki site to post the information we find online.

Global Fellowship and its success on SCU’s promotional packages

Thai-Ry

I transferred to Santa Clara University as a business student two years ago. There were many important factors I was considering before deciding to attend SCU. Being part of a good business program was certainly important; however, community involvement was important as well. The fact that Santa Clara University motivates students and provides the environment for students to get involved in the local and international community was one of the reasons why I decided to enroll. I do not doubt that community involvement locally and internationally- is important to must students who realize the impact of globalization in their lives and careers. Furthermore, through the Global Fellowship program students get to learn about other cultures and the organizational structure in their societies. For this reason, I propose we put information about the Global Fellowship and its success on SCU’s promotional packages. Prospective students will find this program a unique opportunity for them to get exposes and gain some practical skills for live after graduation. Those who find value in this program will become part of it and support it in many ways, thus making it grow. Information on brochures and the website are a good start. It does not have to be something very elaborate as having pictures of the different countries will certainly capture people’s attention. In addition, a few sentences that talk about the value in the program will be sufficient. For more information they could go onto the website and find specific information about the countries and the organizations we work with.

Internet availability

Scott

Documenting internet availability throughout the countries that the global fellows will be working in. How many connections are there in each country? In each city? Are some areas more connected than others (i.e. Rural vs. Urban)? How much do internet connections cost? Also, how fast on average are internet connections? These are some important questions to answer because it will tell us how business plans in each country can be adapted to use their internet in the best way. Some help would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps two or three students could help with the research and final presentation.

Environmental sustainability & Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics

Bea, Ali

The seventh UN Millennium Goal is to ensure environmental sustainability. They have aims to “integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and program and reverse the loss of environmental resources.” Working with the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics we hope to learn more about how to develop and raise public awareness through conveying the importance of energy resource management. Collecting information on how to lead a more sustainable existence is an important aim of the IIEE. According to the 2008 Millennium Development Goals Report, the emissions of carbon dioxide in South East Asia tripled between 1990 and 2005. The emissions of carbon dioxide went from 0.4 millions of metric tons to 0.12 billions of metric tons.

This UN Millennium goal has other aims such as reducing biodiversity loss by conserving land, and slowing down deforestation. Another important aspect of this goal is sustainable access to safe drinking water. If any facets of these goals are met the overall well being and improvement of lives will increase.

Since Indonesia is more susceptible to the effects of climate change due to their location and their populations limited capacity to adapt to the consequences, we will be collecting various reports about the environmental sustainability in Indonesia. Indonesia has extreme weather conditions, which directly affect the environment around them. Immediate action is needed to contain rising greenhouse gas emissions and ozone-depleting substances is also helping to mitigate climate change.

Building awareness of global warming is necessary in order to understand the most efficient sustainable practices. In order to reach our audience in the most effective manner, video and blogs will be used and maintained on a daily basis. While we are in the United States we will be collecting data and information on Indonesia’s sustainable efforts and reporting about them through a blog on the Global Fellow’s site. Through the wiki we will be able to get feedback, information and input from others. While we are in Jakarta, the videos will be used to show first hand what was experienced. Our blogs will be used to support our footage and discuss more in detail about their efforts of environmental sustainability. The combination of raw footage and continuously updated blogs can really help bring the awareness that is needed to benefit the seventh UN Millennium Goal.

We do not need assistance with creating and upholding our blog, but we would like to have other student’s input and thoughts about our findings.

Video blogs

Michael

For my online group project I found my inspiration from a show on the travel channel called “5 Takes.” The show aired a few years ago and chronicled the experiences of five travel journalists as they backpacked around the world, worked at different jobs, and met new people. The five travel journalists all kept online video blogs of their experiences as well as online journals. Since the shows ending I have yet to find such video blogs on the internet containing the experiences of other travelers. I would like to record my experiences on an online journal and an online video podcast and/or blog. I will speak about the different people I meet and the tasks that I am doing at the Turkish Cultural Foundation. I feel that such an interactive log of my experiences can give others a more reflective snapshot of my time in Istanbul. (LTA: possibly using other’s footage until in country to provide “proof of concept” and get grade during quarter.)

Examining the role of NGO’s in Ethiopia

Louise

The Young Women’s Christian Organization was once one of the most influential NGO’s in Ethiopia, and is the oldest and largest multi-cultural women’s organizations in the world. However, the 22 year long hiatus of the organization, that was brought on by the communist “Derg” regime, forced the organization to regroup and begin a new in 1999 along with hundreds of other NGO’s in Ethiopia. With this story in mind, I would like to research the role that NGO’s currently play in Ethiopian society, and how they have been able to grow since being “thrown out” of the country for two decades. Also I’d like to examine the relationship between NGO’s and the contemporary Ethiopian government, and discuss what sort of steps can be made to improve the relationship between the two.

I’d like to gather this research, and present it in an easy to read/access format for the general public, most likely a PowerPoint presentation (depending on the amount of information gathered). This will be posted on a website created for the topic of NGO’s in Ethiopia, listing an abstract with the PowerPoint as an attachment.

Help needed: Assistance with the research: Assistance in creating the website to post the abstract/ attached PowerPoint.

UNESCO website

Francesca

For my online project, I would like to create a website about UNESCO. Ultimately, I want this website to consist of four parts. One part will involve general information about the organization. This will include goals, mission statement, objectives and history. One part will have their current events such as the projects and programs that they have recently implemented. One part will involve setting up an interactive blog (or chat room) where other fellows can comment about what UNESCO is doing and how they feel it will affect its goals. I will pick a particular plan or goal that UNESCO has set for itself and that will serve as prompt for others to share their thoughts. The last part will consist of a blog where I can document all my involvement with UNESCO. It will start with my SCU proposal and continue through my summer in Paris. I hope to share my inner most workings with this organization and help document my progress. For this project, I will need someone to help me create and organize the website. Also, I will assistance help setting up the blogging and chat room elements of the site.

Consumption habits of other communities around the world

Sean, Mark

Mark and I for our online project have thought about creating some kind of Internet resources where Global Fellows may access and submit information about the local communities that they are working in. Specifically, our site will be a place that exemplifies the consumption habits of other communities around the world. We have not solidified exactly what kind of information would be submitted, but there are models that can determine your or a communities carbon footprint. This could be an interesting way to draw parallels between the living habits of people around the world compared to say affluent countries like America. Another idea is to have student have a place to submit sustainable practices that the communities that they are working with take. This would be directed at more rural communities however.

Global Fellows web site

Allison, Jada

Our idea for the online project is to create a website that would include four main links. Two of the links would include: 1) A blogging section and 2) Descriptions of the various places around the world.

The blogging section would be divided up by the different places where the global fellows are interning. Under each place there would be a blog where the interns could contribute photos, videos, or descriptions of how their experience is going. Everyday new entries would be entered onto the blog, and would create a collection of experiences.

The next link would be a description of the places where the interns are in the world. There would be a globe and you can put the curser over a part in the world and the country would be highlighted and you can then click on it. Once clicked, there would be a description of the place where the global fellow is working.

We will need help creating this website, and basically getting all of the technology to work.

Drishtee map

Sadie, William, Willette

We plan to make a Google Map of the various locations that Drishtee operates in. If this is not acceptable, we would like to make a display featuring the issues Drishtee works on.

Non-profit leadership training

Maidere

After meeting with a student from Stanford University who went to the Aarti Home in India last summer, she explained that Sandhya the founder of the Vijay foundation needs better trained staff members who can independently take more initiative in helping with operations and the expansion of the Aarti home. In working with Joy, the Stanford student, I plan on helping her implement some of the workshops she has proposed to provide the staff with more tools and resources to work in a non-profit organization. The workshops will include lessons on how to find and write grants; develop financial goals, projections and budgets; use basic computer software like Microsoft office; and how to market outreach events to help with some of India’s social issues, including gender inequality.

For my online project, I want to provide either a wiki or training room in Second Life that provides online websites, power point tutorials, and worksheets that are electronic resources for the workshops stated above, as well as resources for anyone working in or trying to start a non-profit organization. For example, I will create a Power Point tutorial on how to write a grant proposal, as well as provide a list of online databases where you can start your search for companies and organizations giving grants that may apply to your certain non-profit objectives. I want to post recent news in the non-profit world, maybe profiling successful non-profit organizations and how they got to where they are, etc.

I’m not familiar with wikis or Second Life, so I am not sure which mode is better to present such information, but I would enjoy some consulting on this—maybe from the De Anza students. And if I make a training room, getting some help starting it up would be helpful, as I don’t know how to use Second Life.

Learning about the World through Movement, Expression, and Action

Shanthi

UN Development Millennium Goals Collection of Data for Impact on UN Development Millennium

Goals for the position proposal of teaching of Arts/Drama/and Sport: Learning about the World through Movement, Expression, and Action. The attached proposal is a rough outline of the aspirations I hope to teach while at the orphanage during my time in India. Some aspects of the class are more detailed than others. However, the general idea should be made through a brief overview of the project. I tried to incorporate the reasoning behind the lessons, thus making it easier for the reader to collaborate what could be taken out of such lessons (like empowerment, health care, etc). I will need the reader to be able to identify what UN Millennium Goals this proposal reaches, as well as research links that will allow me to assess how these lessons will impact Millennium goals, as well as add insight as to further develop these programs.

Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL)

Richard

I propose collecting various reports about the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which are relevant to my summer placement. As I will be in Tanzania with Friends of African Village Libraries (FAVL), I propose researching the Millennium Development Goals 2 and 3, on universal education and gender equality. The issues associated with education are addressed through the focus on literacy in my program's mission. Gender equality is directly affected as female empowerment is a key component of and rationale for the effort to increase literacy rates in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, it will be informative in regard to my placement this summer to examine what progress has been made toward reaching the Millennium Development Goals for universal education and gender equality in Tanzania and sub-Saharan Africa more broadly. I will compile various reports and studies on the two topics and synthesize my findings in a concise manner so they may be easily accessed by viewers of the site being created by San Jose Tech. I am passionate about this research in order to gain a deeper understanding of how my project is having a real impact on the fulfillment of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and how I can be a part of that process."

Photo gallery

Molly

My Idea for the website project is to create some online photo journals of the different students fellowship experiences. These could include photos of where they are working, who they are working with, the local people they have meet and the places they have visited. The photos could also have little mini blogs with them that explain what the photo is and how this specific image represents the leadership experience. These could be on the website in the form of different albums, maybe organized by region or country. This would be great because I know when I was looking at the different opportunities Global Fellows offered, I would have loved to see pictures of the different experiences.
