Suggestions for Group Writing

For each group, there is a Group Projects page. Edit the page to include your group's consensus for the "best" resources for each of the 10 course topics, as well as links to the individual lists in the Individual Project of each group member.

Here are some suggestions to help your group prepare your Group Project.

  • This is a group effort, so writing should not include "I" statements.
  • The final review is everyone's job. Revision can be done by the entire group OR by the group member who volunteers to be the Editor with input and suggestions from the group. Everyone on the team participates in the final review.
  • If all groups members are revising the final presentation, explain changes for your team.
  • If there is an Editor, that person makes changes. Others should review and make suggestions for final edits. However, the editor should not be making significant changes to the submission of others. If the editor feels that there should be major revisions, discuss it with the author. Correcting spelling and minor grammatical errors is ok.
  • Spelling and neatness count. Even though this is a course in the Computer Information Systems (CIS) department, all writing, citations and formatting are being graded by college-level writing standards.
  • Allow more time than you think you will need. Create a timeline and stick to it. Schedule rough drafts to be done early so there is enough time to review and revise. Collaborating online takes time.
  • Changes are tracked automatically so you can view previous versions as History. The main view is always the current version so there should not be any issues when working collaboratively on the writing.
  • There is a discussion for questions about the Group project assignment. If you have questions, please ask!

module 7

Getting started with Project Groups Discussions

  • Set a deadline for everyone in the Group to post links to their Individual lists on their own Individual Project pages. There are a number of students automatically assigned to groups who not active in the course so don't assume that everyone will contribute.
  • Work out how you will select the resources to go into the Group Project list. Do this before your deadline for Individual Project lists. If someone on your group member list does not contribute - make a note.
  • Complete the Group Project list by Module 11 deadline.
  • Last day to submit work for credit - Peer reviews and finish up any other activities is the Module 12 deadline. This is a shorter than normal Module period.

More information about Groups

  • The Groups have been assigned randomly. These are the same as your Group Project discussion groups in Canvas
  • Post a note with your name and your Individual Project page to share with your group.
  • Review the work of some of the others and post a reply.
  • This is an introduction to using the Canvas group discussion feature. You have been assigned to a Group
  • To receive credit for group collaboration work, all group discussions must in your appropriate group within the discussion.
  • Group Project page to share work - there is a separate page for each group.

If you have questions about the Project or the group discussion, please ask.

module 4

You have been assigned to a group that you will work with for the entire semester.

There are a couple of short activities to get started. Meet the others in the I’m a... activity. Then practice working in an online group as you and the group share ideas about global issues and how current and future technologies can help resolve them.

The final activities for the course are part Individual projects followed by a group activity to create a published summary of resources for the course.

The groups were randomly assigned by Canvas. This is as good a way to form groups as any. Learning to work in online groups and practicing these skills are important preparation for careers in any field. If you already have experience working in groups online, that’s great. Help the others in your group who may find this difficult.

Your score will be based on your participation and contributions to the group. Do let me know if you get stuck and need clarification on how these groups should function. Every one is different. That’s part of the learning experience.

I’m a ... list 3 things about yourself. One food you really don’t like. Something you really enjoyed doing as a kid. What is your “dream job”.

Global issues and technology solutions. List as may issues as you can. Suggest technology solutions. These technologies don’t have to exist. It is better if you really think of ideas that are totally new.
