I just wanted to say that i thought this was a perfect task to get started on. It might be good to show a few examples of completed profile pages at the start?

Thanks Sarah,

Yep - you are ahead of the game :-). I'll post a link to the UPE community winners.

Inserting a recently uploaded image

I tried the instructions to upload an image and then to insert it on my sandbox page. But I can't seem to find the image using the search bar in the insert media tool on VisualEditor. Thoughts? Alison

Looking through the recently uploaded files, the most recent one I see from you is Media:WE_sandbox_link.PNG. Entering WE sandbox in the search bar of insert media brings your image to first place in the search results for me.

What part of the filename are you searching for?

Jim Tittsler (talk)11:24, 23 January 2015

Ha, I was including the underscores used in the url in the name I typed into the search field.

And the second mistake I was making (when I tried another image) was pasting in the name of the title without the extension. I figured out my error because I noticed that without the last word the image was among the choices, but when I added the last word (without the extension) it wasn't there. And then it occurred to me that if I added .png on the end of the last word, the image I want would be the only choice. Solved (I think).

I'll consider what else I can add to the instructions to help people not make these mistakes.

Thanks for your quick reply, Alison

Sandbox page

I tried making the sandbox page by clicking the link. I got a new page, with a "create" tab rather than an "edit" tab at the top. Doesn't seem like that was the intent.

Alison Snieckus (talk)10:45, 3 January 2015

Well spotted.

Yep a new page will display a "create" tab (and not an "edit" tab). I suggest change the text accordingly - eg When creating your sandbox click on the "Create" tab (or "edit tab" if you already have previous edits on your sandbox page.)

Mackiwg (talk)13:19, 3 January 2015

Or we could create the Sandbox if it didn't exist. It seems better to get users looking for the Create/Edit link... but creating for them is an option.

Jim Tittsler (talk)16:49, 3 January 2015

Clarification - We have the Userpage/Sandbox link next to the Username at the top of the browser. In the case of a redcoat - I assume that the sandbox link shows as a "red link" designating a page to be created?

Perhaps our instructions could reference the Sandbox (red link) with a graphic illustration.

I'm with you that I think its better to get users to create the page themselves to mimic the wiki model and also a visible cue to see who has created a sandbox.

Mackiwg (talk)17:11, 3 January 2015

Of course, now that I play with it (and reread MediaWiki:Gadget-mySandbox.js) it actually does open immediately into edit mode, with a blank page if you didn't have an Sandbox. So Alison's initial description aligns with the gadget's intent. (But since you are already placed in edit mode, you don't need to click the "create" tab... so your comment of 01:19 doesn't apply.)

We aren't prepopulating the sandbox with anything because we haven't created Template:User_sandbox/preload.

We seem to have convinced ourselves we wanted a slightly less magic functionality, but now that I realize it would be different from en.Wikipedia I'm not sure it is a good idea to change it.

Jim Tittsler (talk)17:26, 3 January 2015

Hah, I do see the Sandbox link at the top of the page....we should definitely use that. Not sure I'm getting everything you are talking about...what is a red coat?, not on wp's disambiguation page ;). I don't have a "Sandbox" page, mine is "My_sandbox", and I noted that the link on my page is blue (seems to run counter to the usual practice). Also, not sure what the "slightly less magic functionality" is referring to, but I have to wholeheartedly agree that less magic is better.

So if I'm understanding this, my opinion would be to direct the person to use the Sandbox link at the top of the page, have the edit space be totally blank (unlike wp which has a template at the top...although I could be convinced of the wisdom of the template, if needed) and then suggest the new user type something at the top, like "Welcome to my Sandbox page", and save the page. At which point we direct them to edit using VisualEditor.

Further thoughts?
