Useful abbreviations
As microblog posts are limited to approximately 140 characters, a new vocabulary with its own shorthand and abbreviations has emerged to conserve characters. You may be familiar with some of these abbreviations from text messaging.

@ | Used in conjunction with @username to post a public reply to a user's micropost |
# | Prefix used for a hashtag, eg. #OERu (OER university) |

DM | Direct message (usually a request to use the direct message feature which only you and the recipient can see) |
