Alakal Radio Club, Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India; Fishermen sit in groups repair thier fishing net while listening to the radio. They benefit from expertise of veteran fishermen, and respond better to the voices of the people whom they know better
Alakal - waves in Malayalam and Tamil - is the ﬁrst exclusive community radio initiative in India for ﬁsherfolk. It has started daily three hour experimental narrowcast on 1st May 2006 at coastal radio clubs located at three ﬁsh landing centres in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It covers people from 15 villages who come to these centres to buy and sell ﬁsh.
