Objectives
The purpose of this activity is to understand OER authoring context with reference to the CNX-WE interoperability project, by analyzing the project's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (thus, the acronym SWOT). This reflection will assist us in developing the use case scenarios in preparation of the requirements specification of the project. Specifically:
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the respective authoring approaches?
  • How can the CNX-WE interoperability project add value to both models?
  • What do OER authors want and need?

Connexions

What are the strengths of the Connexions authoring model?

  • Restricting authorship to maintainers of a CNX module enables teachers to host a static instance of their materials for the duration of the course (if required) --Wayne Mackintosh 20:05, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Each resource is associated with clearly identified owners, including contact information, who presumably have a significant stake in the accuracy of the resource (given their name is prominently displayed) and provide the expertise to maintain its accuracy and relevancy. --Alison Snieckus 02:44, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
  • Already formatted citations (for all of the major citation styles) and attribution information are available for every resource; facilitates reuse. (Comment.gif: on second thought, maybe this isn't about the authoring model, but rather a feature of the cnx repository. Feel free to delete if it doesn't apply. --Alison Snieckus 02:44, 25 November 2009 (UTC))

What are the weaknesses / opportunities for improvement in the Connexions authoring approach?

  • Correction of identified errors and suggested improvements by non-members are made to the original authors, who may or may not be available to discuss and correct. --Alison Snieckus 21:45, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

WikiEducator / MediaWiki

What are the strengths of the WikiEducator / Mediawiki authoring model?

1. Being able to bookmark sections within a URL is great (syntax: URL#section ). Unfortunately both CNX and CK-12 (in their mathematics materials) are developing textbooks where the modules or chapters do not have this feature. You can only bookmark the module or chapter and then have to use the browser's FIND option. Thanks Jim Kelly 29 October 2010

OER interoperability wishlist

Sorry about not putting this on the Project plan page but some of us have begun interacting with CNX to include their materials on our WE pages - going back a second time because we missed doing one of the points below is not something we like doing. Thanks Jim Kelly 23 November 2009
