COL will use this information as the basis for developing a country page template to make it easier for WikiEducators to develop their own country pages.



Information requirements for a country page

  • Mexico is a developing nation with a total population of nearly over 100 million people. It is a country of bountiful natural resources and extreme economic conditions. It houses a handful of the world's wealthiest men together with over 40 million people under poverty stricken conditions. Even though the country has a state run national educational program, subsidized and financed by the federal government, it has little effect on many rural farming communities, particularly those which speak a historically inherited pre-columbian language and thus possess a very low level of formal education. Most beneficieries of the state run educational program are city dwellers. There is an active effort on behalf of the Mexican government to turn this situation around; however being that this is a bureaucratic run program, it entails a large amount of red tape that hinders its due progress. On the other hand, the better off Mexicans prefer to recieve private and foreign education as a way of avoiding the obstacles of state run education, but they don't subsidize the poor. One way to overcome many of these obstacles is to offer free on-line education which is state of the art and open to whomever so wishes to acquire it. As such, Mexicans wishing to participate in a project similar to WikiEducator must meet the following requirements:


    • Be concerned with the educational needs of his or her community
    • Be willing to collaborate collectively with other concerned educators of the community
    • Be open to ideas of members coming from other communities
    • Be observant of values that are beneficial for members of his or her community
    • Be respectful of the values of members of different communities, including his or her own
    • Be willing to communicate cooperatively with other educators and discuss common educational goals and objectives
    • Be conscious that language can act as a barrier in the process of diffusion of knowledge, and as such. accept that meaningful content can be translatable for the benefit of other communities
