SESSION 6 : Educational Resources 2 : Local Content

Streaming: Full group presentation breaking into 3 ability groups: basic, intermediate, advanced.

Lead developer: DL overall. GH leads school website. Ahapi lead developing training plan for multimedia tools.

      2. Explain the next task: go into groups and each will start a personal Wordpress website on the gate way servers. In the afternoon, those interested can start an online school website.
  3. Building a basic School Website
    • Format: in 3 groups, basic, intermediate and advanced
    • Level - Intermediary
    • Duration - 1 hour
    • Objectives
      1. Learn about easy to use website building applications
      2. Learn about Wordpress
      3. Learn the basics of Wordpress to build a simple website
      4. Learn how to customize your website template
    • Resources
      • The UAP Gateway and Server have a Wordpress installed. Maybe they can be used in multi-site mode and all participants can build their own website (for example all accessed at http://theirusername.uapcommunity.gov.vu/). Groups will be a little more complicated to orchestrate and some participants will certainly have less hands on practice that way. (DL - yes this is good, each do their own at their own pace, if they are unable they can pair with others who are able)

  4. Facebook and Website Integration
    • Format: continue in the 3 groups. Probably just a demonstration.

      1. Learn about integrating Facebook groups with a website

      • DL has some e-learning pages on Facebook (for PasiMA)
      • Have a simple Wordpress site with Facebook Group up and running

      1. Use the PasiMA FB pages to explain Facebook and differentiate Facebook Groups and Pages
      2. Explain how Wordpress and Facebook can be interconnected
      3. Explain why this is important and the implications (opportunities and administrative implications)
      4. Using the Sir Dudley Tuti site, briefly demonstrate how it works
      5. Show how to connect them using control panel
      6. Exercise: Anyone with FB account can join the example FB group. Then post something on the Wordpress site and FB group can comment etc.
  5. Introduction to Wikis
    • Format: remain in the 3 groups

      2. Learn about collaborative knowledge management as curriculum linked educational project
      3. See relevant examples of local wikis

      • Handouts - printed teacher's guides from UNESCO Marovo Wiki and Canoe is the People
      • Canoe is the People resource on server
    • Activities
      1. What is a wiki (using Wiki educator Learning4Content training notes). Includes looking at wiki examples
      2. Exercise: Create a Wikieducator account and add some information about yourself. (using Wikieducator training notes, simplified)
      3. Presentation: Two examples of collaborative content projects from UNESCO, with integrated teaching resources. (Slideshow and talk prepared by DL)
      4. Time for participants to explore the two resources.
      5. For each example, explain how to access the resource and walk through the key features (Wiki, educational activities (demonstrate via the video clips), ICT curriculum matrix and Thematic curriculum matrix, lesson plan collaboration and sharing).
      6. Exercise: In groups, identify a thematic area (could be environment, climate change, traditional skills or other). Create a simple curriculum matrix for that theme. Agree on a curriculum strand where your theme could be used in student activities as a basis of exploring and capturing indigenous knowledge, local ways of thinking and doing (we'll help with some suggestions). Consider a simple lesson activity that uses the ICTs (computers, tablets, server content) to capture and learn about local knowledge (research, record, elaborate, publish). Finally, use the Wikieducator Lesson Plan Template to share your lesson plan idea.
      7. Discuss the results (each group could present with the lesson plan projected on screen)
      8. Explain that Wiki training is available through DS4OER. There will be afternoon project for participants to learn more wikieducator skills. They can sign up to the wikieducator email group.
  6. Building a Local Online Encyclopedia

      • The UAP Gateway and Server has a Tikiwiki installed. Maybe they can all collaborate by creating their own page with some local story or something relevant to their own community. Ideas I have not looked into this stuff much yet.

  • Add a topic for each Multimedia tool to demos. I suggest one of each image editing (can also have a topic for image editing on tablet), sound recording/editing such as Audacity and video editing (Avidemux?), thought, ideas? [GH]
