Web 2.0 pertains to the "read-write" web. It is interactive and a step up from the flat web 1.0 page. There has been an increased interest in the use of web 2.0/3.0 applications, such as virtual worlds, in order to enhance health care professional education via online simulation. Second Life is an example of an online virtual world that is being used by health care professional educators. When you login into Second Life (http://www.secondlife.com) you will have the opportunity to create an "avatar." The term "avatar" comes from Hinduism and actually means a "literal descent from higher spiritual realms" (Wikipedia, 2009). A further explanation of what an avatar is in Second Life may be viewed by visiting http://secondlife.com/whatis/avatar/

Below is an image of an "avatar."
