My profile

Professional

I am a learning designer and researcher with a focus on online learning and open education. In March 2015, I started working part-time at Loughborough University in the UK [1], as Learning and Teaching Facilitator for the School of Business and Economics. Alongside that role I am a consultant, working and blogging under my company name, Art of E-learning. I'm also a tutor on Leicester's online MA TESOL and Applied Linguistics programme.

Professional background

I started my career in adult literacy and skills development work in South Africa in the early 80s, and subsequently did English language teaching and curriculum development in Spain and the Arabian Gulf. I came to the UK in early 2009 and joined the Beyond Distance Research Alliance (BDRA) [4] at the University of Leicester as a Research Associate. BDRA changed its name to the Institute of Learning Innovation (ILI) and I worked with them until the end of 2014, when the Institute was closed down.

My role at the University of Leicester included research and development projects in OERs (OTTER[5], OSTRICH [6]) and POERUP [7]), which focused on identifying and disseminating information about OER policies around the world, and included carrying out a case study on the OERu as a community of practice. In 2012 I was a SCORE fellow, working in collaboration with the Open University (UK), carrying out research into the meaning of the OERu for Higher Education Institutions in the UK. The project was called TOUCANS (Testing the OER University Concept and Aspirations: a National Study) [8].
