Where good ideas come from (video 4:06) - "innovation" - learn, use, share

• "learner" or "person"
• colleagues - teachers, classmates, family and friends
• not just people - other sources of information, questions & answers, share your ideas
• blog can be a notebook, journal, ibook, iPad notes, sketchnotes, drawings, whatever

“why” of a PLN

• lots of cool stuff, might need it again, faster to make a note than find it again
• "best" stuff - soo much good stuff, soo little time - everyone helps filter
• mine, yours, ours - you might have / know something I want / need - sharing > ours
• lifelong learning - doesn't stop - relevant to career
• responsibility for own learning - not always going to be "teacher", "assignments", "grades"
• high school, college - subjects more depth and breadth won't / can't be taught - learn from assignments, problem sets, recommended reading, projects
• required prior knowledge - only learn what you almost know
• preferences - text, video, audio
• resources available - who, what, where, availability, trustworthy

Some schools are set up as fish distribution centers. They are like fish markets where a person is given a fish and can then prepare it and eat it. This is more like fishing lessons. We don’t just give out the fish. We are teaching you how to fish for yourselves.

Network

• your contribution - essential
• connections - whatever you need/want is out "there" - find it/them
• noticing is a lot of work, get others to help
• connections in this network - teachers, classmates, family members, community members, and others you learn and interact in the physical world. As it expands, it will also include people far beyond the walls of the home, school and community.
