- 53% of the working-age population in the Los Angeles area is functionally illiterate. How are the bureaucrats’ huge pensions going to be paid by the products of people who can’t read or fill out a simple form? It just doesn’t work. This is the most disturbing statistic I’ve seen in a long time. China? 85% literacy (2000) – goal 95% by 2005. [1]
