Spatial Visualization: A Promising Intervention for Promoting Student Equity - Wednesday, April 27, 2016, 2-3:00 pm ET
evidence-based intervention that promotes student equity, persistence, AND success in engineering education.
- Why spatial visualization assessment and training is vital, especially for at-risk women, underrepresented, and international students; and
- How to easily replicate a successful spatial visualization workshop used at the University of Colorado College of Engineering and Applied Science.
Consistent with Active Learning principles, we have identified a key resource to help you prepare for the discussion webinar:
New to spatial visualization research or simply want a refresher?
- Check out ENGAGE Engineering Spatial Visualization resources, and
- View an ENGAGE Engineering 21-minute video or the full 48-minute video.
NOTES
- rotation of 3d objects - Sorby -Purdue
- women, international - pass rate about +65% cf men +80% - intervention > 20% increase
- suitable at any age including k-12 - teach engineering
- passing 20/30 on Purdue spatial visualization - 30 minutes rather 20 - 17% don't pass - not optional - after hours - must pass, counts 5% of design course, 4 sessions over 4 weeks, then retest then 4 more sessions if they don't pass retest
1500 participate in intervention
- isometric drawing * orthographic views * 1 and 2 axis rotations * review & test
- curved surfaces, inclined
- 4 stations - teams, individual, peer teach, computer * blocks, create, draw. practice problems from book. peer teach. software interactive - shapes rotate
- communication - students, faculty - report attendance, tracking long term performance, retention - data management * workshop time extra
- only those who struggle, not everyone. summer bridge for all minor. faculty - 2 session/wk x 2 hours 8 wks + 1 makeup. workshoppers 2hrs x 4wks ?
- play dough, blindfold and describe objects, blocks, collaborative, drawing, describe - peer teach / Montessori, multimodal
- getting started - in publications, resources,
- $$ - difference in retention, performance
- research based results > good working model. statics performance improved - accumulating data but seems promising
