- From “Impact” to Social Process: Computers in Society and Culture (http://pne.people.si.umich.edu/PDF/impact.pdf) Gives detailed background on government projects that involve technology from 1950-1980. Mentions that hacking, programming and other computer related trades are primarily dominated by men.
- Computer Geek’s History of the Internet http://web.archive.org/web/20050401033400/http://www.wbglinks.net/pages/history/ This site gives you a very detailed timeline of when and how technology started and is broken down by centuries. It even dates back to as early as 1642.
Both of these sites show imprtant historical dates when it comes to technology and how it played different roles in society.
Privacy and Freedom
- Did the Internet Kill Privacy? (http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-3445_162-7323148.html). This article and video outlines the risks that the internet, social networking and other web services has when it comes to our privacy. It also raises some interesting discussion questions.
- Cell Phones Hacked http://blackeltabroad.wordpress.com/2012/07/31/8-7-million-cell-phones-hacked-in-south-korea/ This article informs us of the alarming number of 8.7 million cell phones were hacked in South Korea. This is another form of identity theft because our smart phones have a lot of our personal data in them, hackers can obtain it by hacking into our phones as well.
After reading these two articles, it brings awareness to the fact that our privacy is in jepordy just by having a phone or being involved in social media sites.

- Apple: Samsung even lifted our icons (http://news.cnet.com/2300-13579_3-10013263.html) I chose this article because it mentions how closely these technologies are related as far as cell phones and wireless technology and how the patent process wastes millions on litigation.
- Plagiarism http://www.plagiarism.org/ This site clearly defines what plagiarism is and even has a plagiarism checker to see if students are plagiarizing.
These sites are informational and stresses the importance on respecting other people's work.
Crime
- Wifi hacker gets 18 years in prison (http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2011/07/wifi-hacking-neighbor-from-hell-gets-18-years-in-prison/) this is a story about a man who terrorized another man by hacking in to his wifi and committing several felonies, ranging from threatening the vice president to sending emails to his job. Very interesting.

Cyber crimes are easily committed and these articles show the consequences of some crimes and also what to look out for so that you don't become a victim.
Employment, Education and Entertainment
- Elite colleges transform online higher education (http://www.businessweek.com/ap/2012-08-06/elite-colleges-transform-online-higher-education) I picked this article because it notices that many colleges such as MIT, Harvard and Stanford are now offering courses online. It also recognizes that the transformation from traditional to online courses will be challenging to professors.
- Flipped Classroom http://www.knewton.com/flipped-classroom/ Taking a different approach to teaching. Instead of having lectures and discussion in class and assigning work to take home, teachers are now doing the opposite of doing the work in class and having the students watch taped lectures online at home.

Millenium Developmental Goals
- The World Bank (http://www.unfpa.org/public/icpd/MDGs) How they contribute to the MDG is to lend money to achieve goals. Billions are lent to fund educational projects all over the world.
- Reducing Child Mortality through Mobile Technology http://lilliankaivilu.wordpress.com/2011/05/10/group-of-young-entrepreneurs-in-a-bid-to-eradicate-child-mortality-through-mobile-technology/ Another way of using mobile technology to help save lives. In this article SMS reminders are sent to parents reminding them to get their children’s immunizations and other treatments done.
Both of these sites show the global commitment to making the world a better place whether its educational funding or reducing child mortality using technology.
Evaluating and Controlling Technology

- MathWorks (http://www.mathworks.com/products/control/) Mathworks is software that allows you to design control system software. A critical component in product and electrical engineering.
Both sites show that technology benefits a broad range of people whether it be supplying free textbooks to people who need it or software tools that systematically analyze, design, and tune linear control systems.
Risks, Failures and Responsibilities
- Twitter Outrage (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/26/twitter-outage-cause_n_1706097.html?utm_hp_ref=technology) This article is about twitter who planned for redundant failure, but the redundancy also failed. Very interesting because companies plan for failure of devices, but when the recover device fails, then there is no plan.
- Morals and the Machine http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2012/06/robot-ethics The video focuses on the morals and responsibilities that robots or machines may have on society. In the discussion they look at both negative and positive moral attributes of having robots.
The first article outlines the the risks and responsibilities with having robots and the Twitter article points out failures of hardware even when failures are anticipated.

- Geolocation 101 http://www.pcworld.com/article/192803/geolocation_101_how_it_works_the_apps_and_your_privacy.html Geolocation is a way to find real-world location or report your location to others. This article talks about how it works and how it can be used on certain technologies such as phones and other handheld devices.
Both sites give an example of how society is moving in the direction of the anytime anywhere, always being connected to the internet and being able to access it wherever and whenever.

- ID Stronghold (http://www.idstronghold.com/) This company makes RFID blocking wallets which is very interesting. I did not know that people could steal your information without having to touch your wallet.
- Wearable Tech http://mashable.com/2012/05/23/wearable-tech-infographic/ This site showcases a small selection of new wearable technology from tech enhanced glasses to clothes that can monitor your heart rate or record athletic data.
Both sites show that wearabe technology such as clothes that monitor your heart or wallets that hold credit card information is a growing social trend.

In an interview he mentions that his services do many things that many Americans can do themselves but chose not to. I found that interesting.

- Creative Commons (http://creativecommons.org/) I liked this because I always wondered how Wikepdia articles were licensed and how they were able to be used by many people. Many people can contribute to the same work started by one person such as wiki educator.
- Internet Pirates Will Always Win (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/05/sunday-review/internet-pirates-will-always-win.html) I picked this article because it points out that piracy is a huge game of whac-a-mole. It points out that content providers don't want to really solve the problem, because if they were to offer some of their most copyrighted content online, they would make more money than is lost, but they chose not to.

An person claiming they were an artist was able to install a program on computers and silently install camera software, knowing deceiving people and not get punished.

It highlights the scope of the problem, the types of internet victimization, and characteristics of cybercrimes. I picked this site because I did not know that this was an issue.
