[1] [A Computer Geek's History of the Internet]

This timeline was a very interesting read as it highlights the important milestones and history making events from the 1600's to the present. In this timeline you can see the formation of well known technology giants such as: Google, Apple, Microsoft, as well as the innovations that changed the world as we know it.

[2] [Video: Did You Know 4.0]

This is an updated version of "Did You Know" that was done wonderfully through the use of view points on where technology has taken us.

2. Privacy and Freedom of Speech

[3] [Privacy Guidlines: Professor Taylor]

A great list of fundamental guidelines provided by Professor Taylor with De Anza College to help students conduct in a way that helps protect their privacy.

[4] [Freedom of Speech]

Although wikipedia isn't always the greatest source for information, this wiki gives a great account for information on freedom of speech in America. As well as where it came from and what it means to the internet and society today.

3. Intellectual Property

[5] [What does open source mean?]

Open source plays an important role in technological world today and this site provides a great definition of what open source is. It also provides examples of open source software, where developers have access to the original code.

[6] [Imagining the Internet Predictions Database]

A unique source in its material. Essentially a database of predictions made from past(at the time present) about the way the internet and technology will be in the future. This source stemmed a lot of talk between the members of our class.

4. Crime

[7] [FBI - Cyber Crime]

Several links provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on its actions to crack down cyber crimes. Useful information for internet users on how to identify certain scam websites and e-mail, helping protect themselves from becoming victims.

[8] [How to know if your computer is infected]

Gizmo's website is known for their freeware reviews, however, in this article it talks about how PC users can spot the tale-tale-signs of an infected computer. Overall, a great resource for all computer users.

5. Employment, Education and Entertainment

[9] [Jobs are evolving, not becoming obsolete] A great article explaining how jobs are evolving due to technology, and how the middle class will have to acquire more specialized skills to cope with the currently evolving world.

Although outdated by the newer "Did You Know" video, this one still does a fantastic job of explaining how the world is changing with an increase in education and employment due to technology.

6. Millennium Development Goals

This is the official website with the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and what each one is set out to achieve.

[12] [Africa Counts on Education, Technology to Ease Poverty]

This source was brought to light in the Achieve Universal Primary Education discussion by Lydia Case and shows the important role technology can have on providing better education to people, which in turn can help ease poverty.

This was a very thought provoking article about Artificial Intelligence that explains just how far we've come in society with our advancements in technology.

NSF's public investment in science, engineering, education and technology helps to create knowledge and sustain prosperity. Read here about the Internet, microbursts, Web browswers, extrasolar planets, and more... a panoply of discoveries and innovations that began with NSF support.

A fantastic TED video compliments of Jezebel Nguyen in the Risks, Failures and Responsibilities discussion that talks about all the consequences we've begun to experience do to technology.

A good overview of cloud computing --the ever increasingly popular database solution being utilized worldwide-- and its affects on advancing technologies.

[18] [Technology Everywhere]

A wonderful article that details how technology has "invaded" our lives and can be found anywhere and everywhere. The article does a great job of expressing the social impacts that this technology plays on our everyday lives as well.

10. Technology Advances, Social Trends

This technology (the BrainGate impant) is being used to allow paralyzed patients to use their body functions again. To think, this is only the beginning!

[20] [Thought-controlled wheelchairs and bionics that 'feel']

Kari Watanabe, in the "What's new and important?" discussion, posted this fascinating source. The BBC reports on thought-controlled wheelchairs and nerve-controlled prosthetic arms as well as other latest innovations in bionics.

This guideline provided by Professor Taylor gives a great outline of what is fair use, how to do research, and how to avoid plagiarism by providing your sources. It is a good starter for the course as it would require a lot of online discussion where sources would need to be provided.

[22] [A Computer Geek's History of the Internet] (Assignments)

This timeline was a very interesting read as it highlights the important milestones and history making events from the 1600s to the 2000s. Formation of large companies like Google and Apple can be seen throughout the timeline, as well as important innovations that changed the world.

[23] [Children growing weaker as computers replace outdoor activity] (Computers and Society Websites (Discussion post by Anna Herrera))

A good article written by The Guardian that shows the negative effect of technology on children, as they are replacing outdoor activities with playing on gaming consoles and iPads. It is a good reminder to make sure the younger generation does not get addicted to the new gadgets and games and replace them with outdoor activities.

A good analysis of how society has become addicted to technology or too reliant on it. Identity theft is becoming a growing problem with the number of people using the internet for personal services continues to increase. This guideline by the FTC is a great way to avoid and recover from identity theft.

Credit card fraud is a problem that can affect people greatly as hackers use the funds available in others accounts to purchase items. FBI finding some of the credit card thieves and employing them to help crack down on others is a good idea and can help reduce credit card theft. This article is good as it shows how the FBI is able to use the thieves against the crimes itself.

This selected media source provided a very detailed account of accomplishments that have been made in the history of computers. A must read for any computer "geek."

This article talks about the major impacts social networking sites can and have had on our society. It also does a fair job of arguing for both the negative and positives of such sites.

An interesting article that talks about the adverse affects of the overuse of computers by individuals. Also worth noting that the source site is an accredited .edu source.

A simple ten question safety quiz that helps gauge how vulnerable you are. I chose this because I think it's important for people to be aware of even the basic security flaws they may have. Take the quiz, and see how you stack up on security!
