  • Technology Integration Matrix

Of course there has been a component of Active Learning in any teaching and learning experiences. The "news" is that the availability of technology has sparked renewed interest in this particular component. Educators and technologists have seen the potential for providing breadth and depth to the learning experience and the possibilities for providing each learner with and interesting, engaging personalized learning environment. This would be the Goldilocks ideal - not too much, not too little but just right - the perfect environment for each learner to develop skills, understanding and enthusiasm for learning on their own terms. Can today's technologies deliver? Well, it depends...

Technologies and their application in support of learning

  • mobile - cellular, wifi, unconnected, BYO (learner control / pay), school
  • internet access - school, home, community, commercial (internet cafe)
  • stand-alone devices and applications - offline
  • laptop - semi-portable - carts, outside classroom, physically move around, work in groups
  • fixed - desktop / stationary - classroom computers, computer lab, library, media center
  • tablets

Point being, active learning happens with or without technology. Technologies can facilitate new and different active learning activities.

There are plenty of example of active learning activities that can be used with or without technology. Some example suggest a specific technology, product or service. Most activities can be re-imagined with other technologies or without any technology support. It is exciting to be teaching and learning in a time of rapid advances in technologies that can be adapted for enhancing and supporting learners. Keeping up with technology and learners is a challenge. Learning to be self-directed active learners is an important learning literacy skill.
