About me

My name is Rosario Passos and I live in Port Moody, in beautiful British Columbia (BC), Canada. BC is a great place to live... I only wish it wouldn't rain as much as it actually does!

I am a freelance Instructional Designer. Since 2000, I have worked on COL sponsored projects in Mozambique, Kenya and Trinidad & Tobago to develop local capacity in Instructional Design for Open and Distance Learning (ODL).

Prior to that, I worked with local corporations to design and develop successful courses for delivery across a variety of media, from print to CD-ROM to the Internet, including web-based training applications for adults in the workplace.
Last year I designed the online version of the PREST materials using Moodle, and tutored a class of ODL practitioners in several higher education institutions in Africa. It was a very rewarding project, and the African colleagues created tremendous research proposals in a collaborative learning environment.
I am passionate about learning and strongly believe in innovative, relevant and experiential learning that responds to learners’ needs and promotes meaningful learning.

I am currently enrolled in the Masters Degree in Distance Education (MDDE) programme at Athabasca University, Canada's Open University. I love being an online distance learner: it keeps me grounded on the utilization of technology to enhance the learning and teaching processes. Let me share with you a quote from Tony Bates (2000) that I keep present in my professional life as an educator:

"Technology is, by definition, a means to an end, not an end in itself"

Bates, A. W. (Tony). (2000). Managing technological change: strategies for college and university leaders. Chapter 2, (p. 45). San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass Inc.

My interests

I'm interested in:

  • Education for development and the use of technology:
  • Learning objects - issues of quality and effectiveness -, and Open Educational Resources (OERs)
  • Social software in education
  • Networking with educators to share educational resources
  • Sailing and running
