(Comment.gif: Michael ~ let's aim for consistency - "Community Radio" is first letter capitalised, as is "Interactive Radio Toolkit (IRT). It will save a lot of editing later. Also, let's get a photo of you (300 px), and get some hyperlinking going on)

About Me

I am MJR David from Sri Lanka. Although I wear many hats, I am mainly a Community Broadcaster.

I began my career with Mahaweli Community Radio and set up the Kothmale Community Radio and Internet project which converged the little community radio with the powerful web in the hill country Sri Lanka .

I am interested to find out how Community Radio could be further developed using new tools, technologies and thinking

My Interests

While I am working with Digital Story tellers in India and Sri lanka to find out how pictures and sound could be used to tell story’s in a interactive manner I am visiting the Wiki –educator community in search of stories on interactive radio,

While sharing my experience I would like to find out what others have been doing to make radio more interactive

My Projects & Links

  • Interactive Radio Toolkit for Community Radio broadcasters.

A Compass for Interactive Radio (tentative title)

Radio has been propelled on a new route by deregulation and technological innovations.

Radio is once again regaining its prominence within the sphere learning, livelihood support and community expression.

Radio needs to be interactive if it’s to be effective and sustain it self within this newly gained space.

Radio, that preachers on the air is of little use, when it comes to working with engaged learners and communities searching means to express them.

Objectives

To provide insights (not instructions) on how to make Radio more participative and inclusive thru Interaction.

Specifically it would

  • Discuss, the concept of interactivity, participation and inclusiveness, in the context of community and public service radio.
  • Provide insights for format development, presentation, management, research and technology that would enhance interactivity.
  • Demonstrate the real world experience on radio interactivity as practiced.
  • Present futuristic options on interactive radio.

Approach

It will be a hybrid combining instruction with reflection aimed at behavioral and attitudinal change.

The themes will be approached from a problem solving approach. The reader will be encouraged to reflect on whets known and come up with new practices and skills that would enable interactivity.

This would be reflected in the text by referring to the old and new in parallel. The experience of early day farmers radio that encouraged farmers to sit around the radio in a remote location to discuss the programme as well as the technology that enables today’s listener to instantly respond and come up with your point of view will be discussed. It would be blend of the old and new .

Target Audiences
