Activity
Your goal is to identify five labeled cellular structures in a bacteria cell and describe the functions of two of them. The activity is broken into two parts.
In the first part of the guided activity you will identify five structures labeled A, B, E, F, and H. In the second part you will describe the function of two of the structures labeled F, and H. Any time you need help don't hesitate to go back to the introduction or definitions page.
To find the labeled structures follow the procedure below:
- There several images of magnifying glasses on the right-hand side of the activity which allow you to change the part of the image which is magnified. Click on the magnifying glass that is second from the top.
- Move the slider bar on the magnification scale to 3x (To test that you are on the correct setting you could navigate over the length scale and click the left mouse button to magnify. The entire length scale should fit in the magnified area.).
- There are three bacteria that are in focus (ie you can see the internal structure). Navigate the magnifying glass over the top of the right-hand bacteria that is in focus.
- Move the center of the magnifying glass to the top left of this bacteria.
- Click the left mouse button to magnify this portion of the image.
- You should see labels A, B, C, and D (If you don't repeat steps 1 -5). Move the magnifying glass around until you have found the labels A, B, E, F, and H. (The labels are on at least two of the in-focus cells.)
- Move the magnifying glass so that it is centered on the label A.
- Move the slider bar on the magnification scale to 5x.
- Recenter the magnifying glass on the label A.
- Move the slider bar on the magnification scale to 7x.
- Recenter the magnifying glass on the label A.
- At this stage you should be able to identify the structure labeled A.
- Repeat steps 6 to 12 for the labels B, E, F, and H.
- Record your results in your notebook (you may want to use the example data table below).
