At the end of this lesson you should be able to:


  • Identify main/key ideas in a reading text
  • Take notes
  • Organise ideas logically
  • Write a paragraph in which ideas are organised logically and coherently

Definition

A paragraph can be defined as a group of sentences focused on one'' main idea.



A paragraph should have a topic sentence, the main idea on which everything in the paragraph is based. The topic sentence is followed by support sentences, sentences that give/provide support to the topic sentence. The last sentence is usually the concluding sentence.

Read Section 1.3 17.3 :Children's Mental Health Problems in order to take notes. Read the last section of this chapter, 17.3 CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT and take notes on the following:



  • Definition of child abuse and neglect
  • Factors that contribute to child abuse and neglect
  • Forms of child abuse and neglect
  • how child abuse and neglect could be managed/avoided

Assignment

Writing Paragraphs



Use the notes you took and write an article on Child Abuse and Neglect. Your article should have three paragraphs, and each paragraph should be on only one main idea. In the first paragraph you should define what child abuse and neglect is. The body paragraphs should be arranged in this way:

  • Paragraph 1: Factors that cause child abuse and neglect.
  • Paragraph 2: Forms of child abuse and neglect
  • Paragraph 3: How child abuse and neglect could be prevented/managed

In this lesson you learned how to take notes and how to organise ideas logically and coherently in a paragraph. The skills you gained would help you to write paragraphs that are well structured in real life, e.g. when writing essays, articles etc.
