Assessment Component One

This component of the assessment will comprise four tasks, each weighted at 10% of the final grade. Students may select any four tasks from the list of tasks below, which are also located within specific modules.

In this way, students have the opportunity to explore the topics of greatest interest to them.

Additionally, many of the tasks can be completed in a format of the student’s choosing: a blog of approximately 500 words, a two minute video, an audio presentation, a powerpoint presentation or the creation of a website. To learn more about these formats, click here:

Assessment Task Option A

Choose a UN organ from the UN System chart: http://www.un.org/en/aboutun/structure/pdfs/UN_System_Chart_30June2015.pdf

Introduce this organ to your peers. What are its functions and purpose, and how does it fit into the UN system?

You may choose to complete this task as a blog (approximately 500 words), as a video presentation (approximately 2 mins), an audio presentation (approximately 2 mins), a powerpoint presentation or by creating a website.

Assessment Task Option B

Create a glossary of key terms for this subject, providing a brief explanation of each. Your glossary should include fifteen to twenty terms. To get you started, here are a few appropriate terms you may wish to include: global governance, diplomacy, negotiation, intergovernmental organisation, humanitarian intervention, civil society and sovereignty.

Assessment Task Option C

Is it okay to negotiate with terrorists? Present your own perspective on this difficult question, justifying your point of view.

Assessment Task Option D

Choose two different types of diplomacy, and explain them to your peers. If you can, give an example of when each diplomatic approach has been successful and/or unsuccessful.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the UN Security Council?

Assessment Task Option F

Since the establishment of the UN, there have been eight UN Secretaries-General: see http://www.un.org/sg/formersgs.shtml.

Each has brought his own unique approach to the role and each has had to navigate complex international issues. Choose a former Secretary-General and explore their tenure. What were some of their key achievements and challenges?

Assessment Task Option G

Choose either the IMF, the World Bank or the WTO. What is the purpose of your organisation, and what are its primary functions? Who are the members of this organisation? In what ways might it be regarded as successful? What criticisms does it face?

Assessment Task Option H

Since the Genocide Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were adopted in 1948, there have been several additional major international human rights treaties: https://www.humanrights.gov.au/publications/timeline-major-international-human-rights-treaties.

Choose one of the treaties identified on this website. What is the purpose of this treaty? What human rights does it identify, and who is accorded these rights? How many countries have signed the treaty and is it currently in effect? What mechanisms are in place for enforcing the treaty, or encouraging compliance? Are any aspects of the treaty controversial?

Assessment Task Option I

Choose a current peacekeeping operation from the list available here: http://www.un.org/en/peacekeeping/operations/current.shtml .

Provide an overview of this peacekeeping operation for your peers. Where is it located, and what is its purpose? When was it deployed, and how many peacekeepers are involved? Which countries have contributed to this peacekeeping operation? What are some of the successes, challenges or controversies surrounding this operation?

Assessment Task Option J

Select a global governance institution that we have not yet explored as part of this course, and introduce it to your peers. Who are the members of this institution? What is its purpose and what are its functions? Is it known for adopting particular standpoints or attracting controversy in certain areas?

Examples of institutions you may select include: the Organization of American States, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, Alliance of Small Island States, Economic Community of West African States, Arab League, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or your own appropriate selection. (If you are unsure whether your choice is appropriate, please contact your tutor for advice).

Assessment Task Option K

Students who read a book for Activity Three (module eleven) are encouraged to write a book review for their peers.

A good book review provides a brief overview of the text, some critical analysis (was the author persuasive, did the book have an emotional impact and/or what were some of its noteworthy moments) and also provide a recommendation for the reader.
