Anne, Just a note to say welcome to WikiEducator. I've enjoyed reading about your experiences. Like you I am very interested in how OERs contribute to self-directed learning. Have you read the book "Disrupting Classrooms" by Clayton Christensen, et. al? I wonder if OERs might be the technology that radically changes the way education happens?
I've been very impressed with the pedagogical elements available in WikiEducator. Seems like WE can make some very powerful interactive content modules.
