Plurals in category names
Whether a name should be plural or singular is probably arbitrary, but a guideline should be set, otherwise we end up with multiple categories for the same subject, because someone didn't know which was appropriate.
I stated in my draft they should be plural, if possible and logical, because this is what I most frequently see in other wikis. See: WP's general conventions and special conventions. My explanation is obviously not as detailed as WP's, but I would like it to become that specific.
However, what I've noticed is that WE's current convention is mostly singular nouns for list categories, i.e. Category:English teacher. So, what I really need is to hear some discussion on this. Basically, do we forge onward with our own naming conventions (which will generally involve lots of deliberation), or should we model off WP (which involves lots of category name changing)?
Hi Jesse,
Thanks for working on category maintenance.
I am leaning towards the plural form of categories as well. In addition it should not be that much work to recategorize using a bot. I currently have two bot accounts User:KruhlyBot and User:KruhlypyBot (different interfaces) that could be useful once things get rolling.
Regards,
Rob
Rob,
The bot is a really good idea, but I don't think it's so much of a task I wouldn't do it myself. It is probably something I could do during the actual process of restructuring, and having a bot do it may just make extra work (since I'd already be looking so closely, and the bot's work needs to be checked anyway).
I'm curious about the bot thing, though. I want to install one for myself, but I would need some suggestions. I would prefer something with a layman's interface, but has some intermediate code to look at. I would also prefer it be written in a relatively simpler code, as my only programming experience is with JavaScript and Lua. What do you think?
