Template:OER Metadata

Introduction

This is a generic template for OER Metadata and will automatically populate predefined categories derived from the template. It is intended for Community wide use and will not categorise content for identifying national resources. Countries that want to generate country specific categories and subcategories for national initiatives should create country specific templates which simultaneously populate community-wide categories and country specific categories.

Usage

The template should be inserted at the bottom of the page. It is a collapsible table which defaults to the collapsed state. To view the metadata in the published view, users must click on the "show" link displayed.

In the case of resources comprising multiple sub-pages, the convention is to place the metadata template on the home page or parent page of the resource. There may be exceptions, for example a lesson plan may contain a sub-page for a student handout. In this case users may wish to insert a separate metadata template for the student handout.

Syntax

Almost all fields are optional. The fields Date, License and Contributors are filled in automatically.

Copy and paste the following syntax at the bottom of the resource requiring metadata. Placing the template at the bottom of the page will promote consistency and avoid clutter in the body of the editing window.

Provide a descriptive, catchy title for your resource

Provide a short description of the content (less than 50 words)

status

This is used to indicate the phases of development of the resource:

• Left blank it will insert "Not defined" and the information icon will be displayed :
• Use " 1 " To specify "Draft resource under development" and the following progress level icon will be displayed:
• Use " 2 " To specify that the resource is ready for review comments. The following progress level icon will be displayed:. These resources are listed on the "Review needed" sub-category of the relevant subject category <note -- must still be set up in the template>.
• Use " 3 " to indicate that the review phase is completed and the resource is "Published". This indicates that the resource is ready for use more widely and that comments and feedback are invited from educators using the resource. The following progress level icon will be displayed: . These resources are listed on the "Published resources" sub-category of the relevant subject category <note -- must still be set up in the template>.
• Use " 4 " to indicate when the resource has received an acceptable number of usage comments and feedback from teachers. The following progress level icon will be displayed: .

country

Specify the country of the primary author. Eg. "Israel" -- This will generate a country category for all resources using the OER Metadata template and is a good way to identify active WikiEducators in your respective country.

sector

Choose one of the following (note capitalisation):

• School
• Higher Education
• TVET (Technical and vocational education and training)
• Community education
• Professional development

Will default to the category "Sector needs categorisation"

sub-sector

Choose one of the following (note capitalisation and no hyphens):

• Preprimary
• Primary
• Secondary
• Undergraduate
• Postgraduate

This is important for building community within your sub-sector and a category for the relevant sub-sector is automatically inserted.

subject

Can be anything but may be useful to consider these categories:

• Education
• English
• Mathematics
• Science
• Study of Society and Environment
• Health and Physical Education
• Arts
• Languages
• Technology

Will default to the category Subject needs categorisation if left empty.

topic

The specific topic that the resource deals with; ie. Subject could be Mathematics, Topic: Algebra

primary curricular area

Can be anything, but use the term determined by your national curriculum, for example:

• Literature
• Language arts
• Technology
• etc

related curricular area

Can be anything, but use the term determined by your national curriculum. You can provide for up to three related currilular areas (1, 2 or 3). Consider for example:

• Literature
• Language arts
• Technology
• etc

Choose one of the following:

This is important for building community within your sub-sector and a category for the relevant sub-sector is automatically inserted.

audience

Can be anything but may be useful to consider one of the following as the primary intended audience

• Pupil
• Student
• Educator (to include teacher, lecturer and trainer)
• Teacher
• Lecturer
• Trainer
• Parent/carer
• Administrator
• Community member.

No category is automatically inserted and is provided in the metadata template for information purposes.

level

Specify the level for which your OER is intended, for example:

• Grades 9-12
• Year 6 - 8
• First year, undergraduate

learning hours

the notional or intended time that a learner is supposed to spend on the resource, eg 1.5 hours

complexity

recommended options are: easy, intermediate and difficult

creator

Creator is typically the original author(s). You can list more than one creator. This is particularly useful when remixing free content from other sources (for example other CC-BY or CC-BY-SA content) and you have a legal requirement to attribute the original authors. Please see source below.

Some educators like to have their names listed as the original contributors while others have no particular preference in this regard. The wiki does keep track of all contributions which is the technical mechanism for attribution.

license

Defaults to CC-BY-SA. Otherwise enter cc-by (lowercase), or pd (lower case for Public Domain) as these licenses / declarations are also accepted in WikiEducator.

source

A reference to a resource from which the present resource is derived. You would typically enter the url with a piped link. For example [http://cnx.org/content/m14687 WikiEducator: Memoirs, Myths, Misrepresentations and the Magic] which would display as WikiEducator: Memoirs, Myths, Misrepresentations and the Magic

tag

A keyword or tag to describe your resource. Up to 3 tags may be added.
